Absolutely beautiful, brave, and so touching. Thank you, Scott Simon, for sharing your thoughts on such a deeply personal part of yours and your mother's life so eloquently. What a wonderful woman/mother, and loving son.

Thank you so much for this sharing. Also, for all the many thought provoking commentaries on NPR. I laugh/cry all in one paragraph. Always end thinking/feeling deeper. Why I will buy your book: memories of grace. Height of irony! Always highly critical or greatly indifferent but at the end my mother wanted me with her. No death-bed confessions/speeches/wisdoms - except going into the Light said: "Oh Nanny you were right." Dying! She FINALLY agreed with me for the first time! She even discounted my Near Death Experience as brain damage. Dying, I felt her excitement, so I had a good laugh. Ha, Mom "told you so"!! She gave me my moment of Grace - and the relief of bitterness dissolved.I sent her out with a laugh! Then I could have a GOOD cry.
