New Japan took the windy city hostage this past weekend in one of NJPW’s best showings this year and certainly their best show in America since 2019’s G1 Supercard in Madison Square Garden. while the Moxley/Ospreay main event was high on spots and low on emotion, the semi-main saw Minoru Suzuki and Tomohiro Ishii give a rabid American audience one of their best matches ever—only topped in my opinion by their first clash, a vicious singles match from Kizuna Road 2013. my eyes opened wide when Suzuki took a powerslam from Ishii, a bump Suzuki performs rarely nowadays due to the difficulty of controlling his landing (one side of Suzuki’s back has chronic injury issues; he back bumps at a weird angle on the opposite site to avoid further issues). this was a sign that Suzuki was really going to open the tank up in a way he hasn’t done in most of this recent America tour. while mostly a victory lap, allowing audiences to eat out of his palm while risking very little, Suzuki clearly has a couple more big match performances in him. he took the Musclebuster from Samoa Joe on Dynamite last week and this match with Ishii was live round city, even more so than the average Suzuki match. you’ll find no deviation from the Stone Pitbull’s typical match structure here, you know what to expect—but when executed with a powerful, devious foil like Minoru Suzuki who is also firing on all cylinders it’s hard for me to finish an Ishii match with my eyes still dry no matter how many times ive seen it.
