I've lived in Manchester for 2 years and it's still hard to believe I walk the same places as Ian Curtis <3

I'm 57. My best friend, Nick, was a huge Joy Division fan, and introduced me to them at the age of 13 with Unknown Pleasures. Nick was 17 when he ended his life on 18th May 1984. No one saw it coming. if we had, Im sure we could have changed things. I couldnt listen to them for quite a time after he passed. Now, I listen to Joy Division, and Im taken back to those days, before Nick died. Its a mixed emtotion experience. I often wonder what Nick would be doing now.

My sister was a big Joy Division/New Order fan. She died in 2012.

My band rehearsed in the same warehouse as joy division. They were upstairs and we were below them. They used to rehearse every Sunday and the bass guitar was very loud.

Bruv, Ian Curtis is one of our fallen heros. His music maybe dark to some but it's the sound of an age to others.
R.I.P. Ian.
You are missed.

Joy Division / New Order amazing music. Nothing like Joy Division.
Recently nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they fell short of votes in 2023 hopefully
the next time many of you will remember Ian and vote for them.

Haha now way are you in my home town. Wish I’d have known I’d have paid you a visit. Yep, half my family are buried near Ian, I know his daughter Natalie. The shot in the movie Control of the crem where many of my friends and family went :( My mate lived next door to Ian’s house and says he woke up sometimes to crowds paying homage to Ian on anniversary’s. Very little of the film was shot here, the streets where he worked and his house are Macclesfield and a couple of other shots but other parts showing his flat was Nottingham because the flats he grew up in (Victoria) were demolished many years ago (thank god, it was a hellhole). Did make me laugh how Sam Riley and Samantha Morton spent time hanging out in pubs in Macc listening to the accents trying to get them right in time for the movie. Wished I’d have seen Samantha in the boozer - I’d have passed out from shock haha :) The employment exchange turned into the Driving Licence Test Centre. It’s harder I took my driving test. I also re created the bridge photos when I paid homage haha. It’s obligatory! The bridge is a few mins away from the site of The Russell Club where they did their first gigs

It is a heartbreaking story of his. I love Joy division. If Ian could only see what an influence he and the boys had on music. I will always miss Ian. 🖤

Thank you for this video. I'm 56 now and learned about Joy Division around 1984 when I got into New Order, like so many others. If I had a time machine, first thing I'd do is go back and see a JD show somewhere. Interesting sidenote: Many people my age and older likely remember when Mt. St. Helens in Washington erupted. That was on 5/18/80, the same day Ian died. I remember being glued to the tv that day to watch the destruction unfold, flipping between channels to see it all. It's what a 5th grade boy who loves geology does. Little did I know that wasn't the only important news that day, I just wouldn't know it until years later. Joy Division's music and Ian's vocals and lyrics were pure brilliance and gut wrenching. The moody, expansive hollowness of the recordings sounds as fresh today as it did when I first heard it. There is nothing else like it, and never will be again.

I remember reading a piece about Kevin Cummings and this famous photoshoot. He said that as film was so expensive at the time, he really took care not to waste a single photo. That so many iconic images of JD come from this single session is a testament to Cummings' skill.

“How I wish you were here with me now.” 🖤 The years just fly, but I still find Ian iconic in so many ways. Thanks for sharing

The house, to the right of the door is the living room. The window to the left is the other room where Ian would spend time writing lyrics, ect.. The kitchen is on the back of the house and joins onto the living room. You see the layout in the movie Control as they used the actual house for filming.. Love and miss Ian. Love this video! Thank you.

Interesting thing of note: Ian’s daughter was in the movie, Control. She can be seen yelling “fuck off” or something to that effect during the concert scene. I’ve also heard that Deborah Curtis was very helpful herself in the making of the film. 💜
