Great video Dylan. I am a 72 old dev and the constant ageism is obvious. I have a lot of skills and experience, yet no companies hire me. I have to work independently because of this. I don't understand.I hope it changes. Cheers

I am currently 42 with 2 kids. I have been coding for a year now and just recently started a computer science degree. I will be graduating at 45 and I am so hungry and full of enerygy. There is not enough ageism to discourage me.

After watching videos like this and reading these comments I realize how lucky I am to still be employed as a programmer at 59 years old. Never was without work for longer than a few weeks for 30+ years.

Great video Dylan. As a 39 year old learning web dev, I was wondering whether you think that it's better for older learners to specialize quickly i.e. learn basic html, css, javascript and then pick one platform/technology to get really good at as opposed to going the whole full-stack route?

The message I’m getting from this video is: "As a white male 30-year-old developer who’s not a manager, nor involved in the hiring process, neither married nor mortgaged, and 15 to 20 years away from being considered past my prime, and more interested in frameworks than family life (and who the hell would want to do that?), I don’t think that ageism or other forms of prejudice are serious problems in tech.”

But seriously — if you’re in the Tampa area, we should catch up sometime. I’ll buy the beer and would be happy to explain the story from this side of 40.

I like that you are trying to address the issue but I don't think you will understand until you get less and less interviews and more rejections after 40. Unless things change you will experience it as well. Keeping your skills up to date helps but after a while you still won't land new positions. It is too awkward to manage someone who is the age of your parents.

Even if you aren't required to put your age on your resume, they do require you to add things that can date you like training or school graduation dates. Every job sector has some level of ageism.

I would have thought so being in the games industry but I find a lot of my peers in the raising-a-family age group. A lot of 30s+ - moreso than I was anticipating.

So you're telling me you trust your 55 year old doctor to stay up to date on the latest approved treatments, remedies and science but 30 something developers "struggle" to keep up with tech? You're solid proof that ageism is a thing.

Try being 47 and want to work remote part time in IT post Covid. The market is saturated horribly. An entire year and hundreds of job applications latter through indeed. Hundreds!!! Not one single response. And I have 4 degrees and a masters in information theory with 25 years of programming experience. Ageism IS 100% a real thing. Why hire an aged out part time programmer at $75 an hour when a fresh intern for free or at $20 an hour can fill the void and have that fresh CS degree and all the JavaScript latest framework experience required. My advice… if you are creeping up on 40. Run fast. Do anything but programming. Start your own business for God’s sakes but anything but programming. Nothing like working for 25 years destroying your body slowly behind a computer screen creating a virtual product that may never see the light of day. Worst mistake I ever made was getting into IT. Run people is terribly unrewarding career field with no end goal.

Yes, ageism is very real. Skills, experience, degrees, and certifications. They mean nothing.

Here’s the simple fact: none of us are getting any younger, and from what I’ve experienced the players change but attitudes do not so you young kids will be in this same spot in ten years or less.
