Today I'm chasing more issues on my freshly engine swapped manual transmission Volvo V70 as well as doing the first performance modifications to it with some BC Racing coilovers and an exhaust system.

More Volvos please! I have never heard of this problem before, but the online Volvo community is fantastic for "debugging" these cars. Cheers from a S60 owner from Sweden ✌

I get a notif, i watch right away!

By the way the vacuum related issue is more than possible. With time, the hoses connected to the brake vacuum switch can get "crusty" and cause such symptoms. A brake booster issue is possible but not a common thing on these cars so look at this as a last resort. A big problem with time on these is a bit of oil in the throttle body flaps around the center "ring" which causes the same symptoms as you are having when the car is at operating temps. Make sure that is clean as well it is very easy and straight forward. The PCV box itself wont make such symptoms but the hoses related to that system could very well be a cause!

Since it's not turbo, checking the intake pipe is quick and easy, make sure that there's absolutely no cracks whatsoever AFTER the MAF. Any entry of air after the MAF would cause such symptoms.

Concerning the oil passage, it won't make idle related issue similar to vacuum symptoms but i don't know if you checked it but the "tube" like hose on the engine that we saw once you took out the pan does clog up on your gen (ONLY IF THE CAR WAS SITTING FOR A COUPLE MONTHS OR +)

A bit far fetched but you can also check the A/C compressor clutch. Unless you are certain it is a vacuum related issue, then a bad/seizing/seized A/C compressor can lead to such symptoms when at operating temps as well but not very common.

Keep up the beautiful videos, I couldn't believe that you were into Volvos. Your main channel was the reason why I got better equipment and started my own channel lol. Congrats on the S60R! Can't wait to see what you do with it :)

bought a 05 D5 v70 (UK) back in october which has started my car modification journey and finding not just your other channel 2 years ago for photography you're now modding a v70 on this one...the god damn JOY I have is unreal. Me and my mate both have V70's and are watching every upload! looking forward to the future of this channel!!

For me that idle issue sounds like two ways of problems:
1. Throttle body trying to die, I think you got Magneti Marelli that are giving similar symptoms - probably electronic after it gets hot, starts to lose its own mind.
2. VVT solenoid is dying, you can check it by, cleaning it and connecting it straight to 12V to check if it clicks.

I have a 2003 V70 had a similar issue, after changing the fuel pressure sensor . Low idle and no more engine shutoff finally went away. Hope that helps our fellow Volvo enthusiasts.

OMG, Willem. I'm glad you can have such a positive approach to this thing, it would give me nightmares. I had a Volvo 240 wagon, something like an '82, and it didn't have diagnostics like yours does. At some point I ran out of luck on an issue that was severe, hired the best mechanic I could find, and he found a wire shorting to the car frame inside of some long hollow channel someplace. Similar nightmares decades later with a BMW Z3 convertible. At my age, it's Hondas, Toyota trucks, or Mazdas for me if I ever buy another used car that's not an EV. Cheers! I love this series! ✌

So glad to see the catback, very much an easy choice for performance mods. I just bought my first volvo after working for them for almost 2 years. After wheels and tires and maintenance upgrades a 2 inch cross country performance lift and an IPD catback exhaust are for sure my summer projects.

The ETM you have is a Magnetti Marelli unit and they’re known to have issues with the tps sensor. Xemodex does a send in repair and warranties for life. It’s expensive but that could be your fix. My guess is it’s trying to account for the change in vacuum and the plate is sticking or wrong value being recorded.

Brake booster ejector, switch and the lines can develop leaks, or even the booster itself. Smoke test the vacuum system if you’re sure that’s the issue.

man this is so cool. just found your car channel and started watching all the videos.i have such strong memories to the v70 bc we used to have a couple of them in my childhood...i wasnt aware up until today that the car actually has a 5cyl which explains why i liked the sound of the engine so much as a kid. love how well the videos are produced and its super interesting to watch even tho i only understand half of it. cheers from switzerland :)

If you're still hunting down the idle issue, I had a near identical issue on my old 2000 S70, and it was the throttle body and plate were dirty. After cleaning them up really well, it cleared the issue entirely.

I had the same kinda problems with my S60 -07 and it was because faulty engine mount! It has little vacuum hose to it and it was leaking

One easy thing to check is the evap solenoid under the intake manifold. Take it of and see if you can make it click with a 9-volt battery.

I had problems with idling, ended up changing every vacuum line and the pcv system. I also had low fuel pressure on live data, so i changed the fuel punp unit and filter. Now it works really well and doesnt throw any codes.

Make a home made smoke machine out of a jar, soldering iron, and a sock. It's the best tool I've ever made and used on my volvos as the turbo ones can have a lot of vacuum lines.
I did have the issues you are describing once before in an S80 I had. Somehow some time a workshop had done some work on the exhaust and put the o2 sensors back in the wrong order so when it was hot and idling at traffic lights it would do the same as yours. But that was on a 4 o2 sensor configuration, yours would be a lot harder to wrongly put back together as there are only 2.
Good luck, finding vacuum leaks is very easy with a little smoke machine.

Wouldn’t it be funny if this grew bigger than your other channel

Love this series more than I should. If it makes you feel any better, I have a 2005 S40 2.4i that does the same thing, just not as often as it sounds like yours is. I found that it had a bad vacuum pump but replacing it didn't solve the problem. Wouldn't be surprised if I have a small vacuum leak somewhere though and perhaps that's what could be wrong with yours. Hope you can figure it out!
