"Hey Bradley, you mentioned that you've played Planescape: Torment in the past and seriously considering playing it again. That was an excellent game and I really hope you decide to do just that. I was curious what other similar games from that era that you may have played as well. I was thinking Baldur's Gate, early Fallout titles and maybe other RPGs. Thanks!"

"Searching out of fear in the gathering gloom
And suddenly a movement in the corner of the room
And there is nothing I can do, when I realize with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight..."

Funny about those spiders. The ones in my man cave tend not to try and catch me.

I have also been a big reader in the past but find it difficult to just sit and plow through a book. And I’ve got at least two half read books sitting waiting for me to finish. One thing I have done is audio books during my commute. I can concentrate pretty well on those while driving. My wife is still very much an avid reader of actual books, but she hardly uses her smartphone. So there ya go.

As to thoughts, I don’t think in words or emotions but use a kind of shorthand instead. Just a habit. The one time I do use words is sometimes I’ll ask a question out load with myself (only when alone). Something like “what’s that spider doing there?” Haha.

When i'm thinking, I have complete sentences in my head, almost like a conversation with myself. I assumed everyone does. Sometimes I even contradict myself.

Here's another one for ya: I have a friend who moved to England about 10 years ago (we are native Dutch speakers), and she told me that after 5 years of living abroad she noticed that she had begun dreaming in English (instead of Dutch).

Speaking of dreaming; I read somewhere that some people dream in color, while others dream in black&white. I had to think about it really hard, but I still can't tell if I dream in color or black&white. Just don't know.

Concerning recording when playing - I go through this hell weekly when trying to get down ideas in my garage. I'm convinced its performance anxiety, getting too much in your head. Keep up the work and just trust that you're crushing it bud.

and internal dialogue is some of the best i experience all day

It's a Monday Stuff and Things in Japan! It's been a while since I checked in, so I thought I would pop in and say hello. I hear you about reading. I used to love reading in my youth, but all the readings from university ruined it for me because there was so much of it. I still remember reading an Adorno and Horkheimer article 10+ times, and I still couldn't make heads or tails of it without assistance from our professor. Thankfully, the majority of the class also had trouble with it, so we had to go over it together. I've slowly started getting back into it because my day job as an English teacher requires it.

About the reading, I can't focus for too long which lead to not remembering what I just read. About the inner monolog, I usually create images and scenarios in my head and sometimes when I think too deep, it felt real and I have to snap out off it.

I took a course that taught the basic idea that, above a certain lizard-brain level, our "feelings" are actually thoughts we had that cause a physiological response based on the reactions "we should have" based on our thoughts. I think this is true of all people, and that some are just totally unaware of their inner dialogue. They aren't reacting to the world based on their feelings, they are reacting to the world based on thoughts that CAUSED those feelings. (Knowing what those thoughts are can help you change them - whereas, if you aren't aware of them, It's much harder to do anything but react as you've always done).

I just reread The Book of the New Sun and Urth of the New Sun last month. Love Gene Wolfe.

I am like you, Bradley. 24/7 inner dialogue, well awake at least, ahem. How do people think without words? Mind-blown!

Interesting... I believe I think in words, because I'm a writer and reader, and words and combinations of words make sense to me. So I, by default, encapsulate my perceptions in those same combinations. However, I can see how others may be completely opposite. I used to teach writing, and many of my students were visual artists who had to almost transliterate images into words, whereas I just went straight to the words themselves. As for the reading, it's like any other practice; read more, you'll get better at it. When I was in college I could blow through 50 pages of Faulkner an hour. Today, not so much :D.

I also struggle to remember what I read sometimes. Yes, I think in words - and I get really frustrated when I can’t remember the word that I want.

An old girlfriend of mine was from Poland and I remember her telling me that after being in the states for a few years she began to think in English.

I always have an inner dialogue. I have full conversations with myself all the time. When I’m trying to remember something, I go through various words in my head… But I recently read an article that reported on a study about this very topic. It seems very evenly split whether or not a person thinks in words.

And I too have found it hard to read fiction again. What used to take me a couple days to get through (while still going about my usual activities), now takes me weeks

That's why I listen to audiobooks. Every time I try to sit down and read I have to retrace my steps over and over. It's been like that since before smart devices. I'm not ADD or ADHD or anything like that, it's like my eyes keep reading while my brain moves into some other direction.

If the spiders in my head would SHUT UP when I'm TRYING TO READ it would certainly help matters!

Hi Bradley, I have a pipe related question. Have you ever heard of people who don’t taste the tobacco, as they smoke their pipe? I’ve been smoking a pipe for almost three years, and I can’t say that I’ve ever tasted the tobacco. I’ve smoked a wide variety of blends, from Captain Black to Elizabethan Mixture. If I retrohale, I get an aroma or essence. But I don’t taste anything. Am I a freak of nature? Can only super tasters pick up the flavors of pipe tobacco? Curious to know your thoughts. Thank you for you great channel!

My inner dialog is also a constant. I've had the same difficulty with reading for awhile now.

Okay. How does the thought of a spider sucking you dry not freak you out? For me, it is anything that can bite me and hurt me - that terrifies me. Of course, I grew up in Phoenix where black widows are ubiquitous, and I was always told that they could kill me. So there’s that.
