Language is definitely a “use it or lose it.” skill.

Guys, it’s not that uncommon to forget your first language, especially when you have little reason to use it in life. Give her a break.

The haters of Brie Larson have reached a peak where they will even troll her for literally breathing heavily

linguistics major here! language rejection is sadly a very common phenomenon in the US, especially among first generation americans of foreign born parents! it’s even more common if only one of your parents speaks the language. the same thing happened to me with spanish, it was my first language but by like brie, by grade school i didn’t want to/had less opportunities to speak it!

This is a completely normal situation. Agree that she needs English much more than French. Of course, haters, you, as always, need to find a reason to condemn Brie Larson, but calm down, this case happens to many. I love her, she's very sweet.

Brie Larson says she forgets her first language -
Whole comment section says she's stupid

I bet none of you would be saying the same thing if this video was of a celebrity you "liked".

My family has told me that I was able to speak our language, Igbo, for a time when I was a very young child. When we (all of us except my eldest sister) visited my grandmother in Nigeria (I was 2 at the time) we stayed for quite some time. During that time, my grandmother only spoke to me in Igbo. And so, when I returned to the US, my big sis couldn’t understand me because I only spoke Igbo. But, Dad never spoke to me in Igbo. To this day (I’m 38), Dad has never tried to speak one sentence to me in Igbo. So, with none of my friends, classmates, or my dad speaking to me in the language…the knowledge of the language wasn’t retained.

As a first generation Latin American I use my English way more and haven’t forgotten my first language but my mind thinks in English’s so it’s sort of dying. I keep it alive by not being so hard on myself for knowing 2 languages and speaking it whenever I can

I've had the same thing happen to me. I was told that I spoke fluent Tagalog (my first language), but when I moved to Canada, I lost it, as nobody I knew in school spoke Tagalog. I could understand it, as it was used in my household, but I primarily spoke English back.

By the time I met someone my age who could speak Tagalog, it was already too late and I wasn't able to speak it confidently and without an accent. It's really embarrassing, people would poke fun of my accent when I spoke Tagalog, which further discouraged me from trying to speak it. Even my own mother told me to speak English when I tried to speak Tagalog. It was super embarrassing, people should be more encouraging about these things, shouldn't they?

A French tourist from France told me they can't understand Canadian French and when they talk, it was like someone was spitting and trying to speak French at the same time.

Everyone's being a knight in shining armour against haters hating on the fact she doesn't know french anymore, but I can't find a single negative comment to that effect. Talk about tilting at windmills.

i swear y’all like to attack brie larson for literally everything. oh she forgets a language she only knew for a few years in her VERY EARLY childhood but then learned English to match her demographic. god forbid she does literally anything and y’all are wanting her to step down from her role of captain marvel

French Canadian hockey players are often a good exemple of this, some of them build a life in the US and when returning they really struggle
