Anubis, Hel and Hades has been done dirty by Hollywood. They are not evil.

This is why I like Emily Dickinson’s works- she was so scared of death and dying she always portrayed death in kind and caring ways, like a carriage driver waiting patiently to pick her up and take her for a leisurely trip.

I love how death gods are always perceived as evil and scary, when in fact they are just really chill and probably the only gods within the entire pantheon that you would feel safe with.

You forgot one of the best parts of this scene where, she was cooking for her family when she passed away, and out of fear that they were going to be reluctant to try the meal she painstakingly was making for them when they found her eventually, she asked Anubis if he was willing to taste it for her instead, to make sure it turned out good. And he graciously not only took a taste but said in earnest that it was perfect, before leading her up the stairs to the Duat. It was such a touching moment honestly, especially with how the entire time he was with Mrs. Fadil he treated her with such grace and care and that little moment of him, taking his time to do that one, simple little action that meant a lot to this soul, was genuinely touching and beautiful.

They are usually not evil in mythology, they are just associated very negatively because no one ever wants to meet them.

It's because Neil Gaiman is a genius writer. He gives a lot of thought and heart to most of the characters he writes.

Death from Sandman was the best depiction of Death I've ever seen, she nailed it.

Anubis was super chill in American Gods, he just didn't tolerate disrespect or being cheated

So far, my favorite depiction of Death is from Sandman. She doesn't introduce herself. People just realize once they laid eyes on her, and she gives them the most comforting words and smile before they cross. My favorite line from her was, "people feel as pleased to have been born as if they did it themselves. But they get upset and hurt and shaken when they die. But eventually, I learned that all they really need is a kind word and a friendly face. Like they had in the beginning."

he's a sweetheart. he was kind, gentle, answered her questions and sent her off to her proper afterlife.

As an Egyptian, I can confirm this is a pretty accurate representation of the 42 laws of ma'at, even if it's a very watered down version, the process of being judged in a nutshell is that thoth writes what you say during the judgement while anubis weighs your heart, if your heart was heavier then the feather, your heart got consumed by ammit, a fusion monster that devours your soul and sends you to the underworld/hell, if it was lighter, then you are guided to aaru/heaven (one of the 21 doors) by anubis and if both are equal you will still go to heaven but it will not be the best variant or let's say "level of enjoyment" of it.

This set of scenes was so beautifully presented and acted. The moment when Mrs. Fadil asks Anubis "You're a kind boy, you choose for me." Brilliant.

whoever wrote and directed this scene was incredible at it. I think it did such an incredible homage to Anubis

Such an underrated show...its a shame it couldn't continue.

Granted the show had its issues...but at its center...it was an incredible show and its depictions.

I love it when death deities are given more characterization than simply being the evil one. I like the calm and professional reaper, someone who isn't evil but instead is simply carrying out a natural process of the universe and is content to continue doing it. Death itself is a scary concept because of human's natural fear of the unknown, but when death is a calm and polite being who simply guides you to the afterlife, it can take some of that fear away.

That's the misconception like 90% of films have about personifications of death. Their job isn't to kill you or take your soul, their job is to deal with those who have died.

I also love the video game Hades interpretation of Hades. He's just an overworked dad who basically runs the underworld like an office. It's so fun and silly, I absolutely love the moments where Zagreus learns about what it means to be a god of the afterlife.
