The Distributive Property for Arithmetic

We know about the commutative property and the associative property, but there are more to learn! This next one, the distributive property, is very important in algebra, so let's introduce it now so that when we get there we already have this covered.

Thanks I find this fascinating I used this method to solve 73•836

I did it twice for each digit multiplied the added the two results so I only really need to multiply by single digits numbers which is why I also divided 70 by 10 to make it easier to multiply by 7 instead of 70 then I later multiplied it back by 10.



3(100•8+10•3+6)
(3•100•8)+(3•10•3)+(3•6)
3•8=24•100=2400
3•3=9•10=90
3•6=18

(2400)+(90)+(18)= 2508

****70/10=7****

7(100•8+10•3+6)
(7•100•8)+(7•10•3)+(7•6)

7•8=56•100=5600
7•3=21•10=210
7•6=42

(5600)+(210)+(42)=5852

****5852•10=58520****

2508+
58520=
61028

73•836 = 2508+58520 = 61028
