It's the way software is used, if you want you can program the software to recognize barcodes as well.

But what I mean is, you can scan a barcode to display what it refers to. If you use an different symbol then it will make no difference.

If you use the symbol to actually be a placeholder that augments the information on/around it then it is augmented reality.

Amazing, to say the least. How exciting is to see RDJ jumping to us like that. :)

@N3CR1S

From my point of perspective the magazine it self is completely skipped, you could just cut out the symbol from the magazine and use that instead. (or take a screenshot from this video and print out the symbol, that even works)

What I consider a good example of AR is when the content of the magazine it self would be updated if you held it infront of the camera.
So the value of the magazine you buy remains.

But I do admit that it would turn into a more complex process.

I have to give props to Esquire for trying something fresh with the old paper magazine. It's certainly better than the last cacky and gimmicky cover they had. This idea is promising.

I wish I could, but the issue is not on sale anymore.

what do you think about colors magzine, the did a similar thing?

What do you need the paper for? It's only a rudimentary way of transmitting a code that could be transmitted electronically, after all you need a computer with internet connection anyway.

Paper is obsolete and will reach its end sooner or later, this may be a way to switch towards the future (digital media), though.

Since it is possible to have a freezer at our homes we don't buy ice any more. This is the same. Thumbs up @itbitme.

I think it's amazing, but apparently I need a better graphics card? I consider my laptop to be pretty up to date, and if I need a new graphics card to view it, that kinda bums me off.

@bakasheru Bar codes do not display 3D images.

I think this is brilliant technology! I'm tempted to buy this issue (how old is it) just to check this out. see... it's working already. LOL!

@N3CR1S

Definition of AR
* combines real and virtual
* is interactive in real time
* is registered in 3D

I do have to admit that this example used in the Esquire magazine use these 3 points. But there poorly executed.

As to quote the wikipedia for it "More recently, the term augmented reality has been blurred a bit due to the increased interest of the general public in AR."

Very nice, but it's taking digital media to make print media exciting again.

....

Humanity does this for almost 50 years... we call them barcodes.

I find it rather annoying that the call this "Augmented Reality" and "NEW TECHNOLOGY" for using almost the same idea that Bernard Silver had back in 1948

Augmented Reality should do what it supposed to do, augment the reality around us, not display Easter eggs from a magazine on your computer screen.
