Fighting with Sword & Buckler is a pleasure!

It's the weapon combination that brought me to the Bolognese sources, so it holds a special place in my heart. Here we use a historically inspired ruleset, that Manciolino would hopefully approve of. I edited the footage and added commentary - how do you like it?

00:00 Marius vs. Martin (Semifinal)
02:16 Alex vs. Lorenzo (Semifinal)
04:30 3rd Place Match
06:34 1st Place Match

In historical fencing or HEMA (for Historical European Martial Arts) we reconstruct sword fighting systems from historical sources. Our club focuses on Italian medieval and renaissance sources, fencing with the Spadone (Two-Handed Sword), Spear, Sidesword (One-Handed Sword) together with Shield, Cape, Dagger, you name it!

Great exchange, specially in both finals :) and you really channeled the manciolino spirit with those flourishes!

I love the idea of giving finishing an exchange unharmed priority in scoring. Cool ruleset, and congratulations on your win.

Beautiful fencing Martin.
I'll never stop being amazed at just how clean sidesword fencing is even at the highest level compared to other weapons which end up in a twitchy reflexive mess, or at the very least look nothing like the style the books describe.

Thank you for the hit markers, they make this far easier to watch. :D

What a fun way to count points. What was the experience of the participants? Did they fight differently than usual?

This is intriguing swordplay.
For beginners who wish to spar with metal blunts, what minimum safety equipment would you recommend, and what sellers?

The "Now I can't lose!" mindset is pretty pervasive. Back when I played World of Tanks regularly I used a mod that would pull up players' stats and calculate a statistical probability for each side to win or lose the battle. A lot of players used the same mod, and aside from the usual unsportsmanlike behavior (quitting out of the battle because their team had too low a probability to win for their taste) I found that teams that had very high probabilities to win actually tended to lose more than they ought to. Aside from the conceptual flaws in the model, this often happened because players on the winning team suddenly "lost their edge" and started doing pants-on-head stupid things that tended to get them killed.
The pattern is so pervasive, in fact, that one channel has an entire series called "Game Of Throws" dedicated to teams in World of Warships taking a game that's basically won and turning it into a loss.
