I FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS PIECE ...... when my elder brother blasted this from his LP, hooked to a Sony amp, powering 2 HUGE Sansui speakers !!!!!
...... I cracked the speakers .......

The last time I enjoyed this piece 'Live' in Japan, the bass drum was used to substitute the canon blasts.

Very thankful that the Eastern Army Band, 1st Band, 12th Band and 1st Artillery Unit of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force played the piece at a tempo very close to the original !!!!!!!!
Any quicker, it'll feel rushed. Any slower, sluggish.

The level of precision employed is AMAZING !!!!!
In the original recording, the canon blasts were added IN POST.
In the videos, the Japanese fired their ordinances LIVE !!!!!
They had to take into account the lag between giving the command to fire and the pulling of the cords to the actual canon blasts that sync PERFECTLY with the music that the band was playing !!!!
...... which was at the same tempo as the one in the original recording !!!!!

I saw this performed live at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati by the Pops in '75. Being young I didn't want to go, but my grandfather was into classical music and greatly admired Kunzel.
My sullen young teenage attitude transformed to one of great delight and joy at this masterpiece performed by an iconic orchestra led by a true maestro.
One of my fondest memories.

What I love about this version over nearly every other one with actual military is that they not only are using their Artillery pieces, they are firing in time as written in the score!

Back in high school I played in the band. The music teacher decided we would perform the 1812 at an evening concert. For the cannons, what another teacher came up with was a rain barrel with about a one quarter fill of water, an old double barreled shotgun and some do it yourself 'blank' shotshells. Well, to keep the powder in place, a kind of a wad is needed so perhaps not so 'blank'.

What a mess!! During practice, at the first shot, water erupted and drenched the teacher. The noise was terrific (as it was supposed to be). So, at the performance, more water was used and the teacher showed up in head to toe rain gear including a genuine Newfoundland slicker and a Sou' Wester hat. The crowd loved it. Of course, that was back in 1971. You couldn't pull off a stunt like that today.
