Mortal Weapons Series

After two controversial decisions and 24 rounds of furious leather, the rivalry between Manny Paquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez was far from settled. Both fighters were confident they’d won both showings, and with no knockout to show for their efforts, there were still questions about who reigned supreme. So, on November 12th, 2011, seven years removed from their first meeting, the two would meet again under the bright lights of the MGM Grand.

In the years following Manny Pacquiao’s split-decision win in the second Marquez fight, he continued his legendary campaign. Pacman captured world titles at lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight, and super welterweight, making him the only man to capture world titles in eight separate divisions, a record that stands today. Along the way he bested oppositionlike De La Hoya, Cotto, Margarito, and Mosely.

Juan Manuel Marquez kept busy as well, winning The Ring, WBA, and WBO lightweight titles. Following the loss to Pacquiao, Marquez defeated Casamayor, and won The Ring 2009 Fight of the Year against Juan Diaz. After a spirited-yet-ill-fated performance against a returning Floyd
Mayweather Jr., Marquez rebounded with three straight wins.
While Paquiao and Marquez carved separate paths since their second bout, their fates would collide once more for the WBO welterweight title.

Their styles were perfect foils for each other. An aggressive, talented, quicker fighter vs a counterpunching, more cerebral fighter. They both showed so much heart and laid out on the line.

Barrera, Morales, Marquez and Pacquiao are the kings of their time at their weights.
Can watch all their fights over and over for ever.

This is like Ippo and Miyata from Hajime no Ippo. Pac's aggressiveness resembles Ippo, while El Dinamita's precise counterpunching is like that of Miyata.

I'm a massive Pacquiao fan, and while I agreed with the first 2 decisions I thought JMM won the 3rd. Its so incredibly rare to have two fighters with such complementary styles and such similar mentalities determined to win, who push each other to the absolute limit. It may sound hyperbolic to older or younger generations but for me this was my generations Duran Leonard, Ali Frazier. It was a privilege to watch them live, even when number 4 broke my heart.

Another great breakdown! Personally I’d love a breakdown of the two fights between Chavez and Taylor! Both were action packed!

I remember Max Kellerman saying when he called the fight from ringside he scored it a draw. He went home to rewatch it from a different perspective, changed his scorecard by a few rounds, and still had it a draw.

Personally I agree, especially as i think Marquez giving away the 12th round cost him.

Glad you did this. I loved these fights. Marquez’s body shots and uppercuts are sick; Pac-Man is always fun to watch and that cross is just fire.

Before I make my argument, I'd like to say that I love and respect Pacquiao so much, he's one of my favorites ever. Basically whenever he wasn't fighting mexican fighters, I was rooting for him in every fight and I think he deserved the decision in the 1st fight with Marquez.

That being said, Marquez DOMINATED in this fight, and I will never understand why people say this was even close, it wasn't, this was pure masterclass from Marquez. No question, no debate, clear as day that Marquez won this fight by a confortable margin.

1:28 - 1:48 these were meant to be Pacquiao's highlights of the round, and you can hear this man praising Pacquiao like he was doing something, but you look at the footage and all you see is Pacquiao missing 90%of what he throws. That's the summary of the fight.

I consider this as the REAL draw. 1, 2 for Pacquiao, 3 draw, 4 Marquez.

Pacman was so kind and generous that he still gave marquez 4th chance instead of calling it over since he has nothing to prove anymore.

Great breakdown! I wanted to hear more about the feints Marquez uses in this fight to slow down the pace against Pacquiao.
