Slade and Nighwing were both invented by legendary creative team Wolfman and Perez.
The two characters have been at odds since the 80's.
There exists a perfect dichotomy between Grayson's natural yearning to rescue people from troublesome situations and Slade's rigid insistence on assassinating his targets without remorse.

In the comics, Deathstroke doesn’t hate them. Maybe he does, I don’t know. But he didn’t used to, he was actually a big ally for a while .

In the original Teen Titans TV show on Cartoon Network, I always got the impression like Slade less hated the Titans, and more was deliberately manipulating them, especially Robin, by acting as their adversary.

One constant that always happened without fail is that if he appeared, they would fight him. If he claimed to be doing something, they would do their best to put a stop to it. This makes the group predictable and manipulatable. He could claim to be doing one thing to make the Titans do the opposite, and thus trick them into achieving something he wanted done for him.

Bolstering this was the story arc where he literally managed to adopt Robin as his own sidekick. Dude was such a mastermind manipulator that he actually made Robin (begrudgingly) betray his friends for a time, and less directly also Batman.
