It’s so strange to think there’s people out there criticizing art who are entitled to give it. His work, regardless of “professional technique”, portrays emotions and really speaks to people like me. How could someone say such harsh things..everyone should be able to express themselves freely. This is why I dislike art and design schools. They kill your creativity..everything you love.

Vettriano had a very good sense for composition. He also had a keen sense of colour use – subdues, dramatic using complementary colours in a very well balanced fashion. Although he has been accused as having no technical skill at painting and that he was simply 'colouring in' – I'd beg to differ, I feel he was a highly technical painter, using a very parred down pallet. which takes great skill and technical ability to pull off. His definitely influenced by Edward Hopper, but sadly his subject matter is more flipped and romantic. If he had rather delved into the often tragic and hard edged side of modern Scottish life or painted the grizzly scenes of mining life he would have certainly found his work in national galleries. I think the second phase of his painting life veered too much to the corny seedy side of the spectrum, which I think let him down as a serious painter who had something to say – pity.
However, he certainly found success in his own lifetime and that is seldom the case in the life of painters. I think there can be lessons to be learnt for young artists on how to find success but also what not to do to remain relevant as a serious artist with something to say.

I wish he had painted the horse racing scene, because I feel had he done, he would have had a huge following in the snobbish upper crust world of money.

When JV dies, they'll be plenty of pundits fawning over his works and singing his praises. They don't want to do it now, because JV became successful without their help, thus JV has no need to pander to them. I love JV's paintings, he is Scotland's Hopper, but the element of fantasy in his works sets him apart from Hopper. Great video.

I think the root of his doubts must stem from the fact of how he uses photos.
