Signs of sudden cardiac arrest could show up early

New research finds sudden cardiac arrest isn’t so sudden. The study shows many patients miss or even ignore the early warning signs that may begin showing up weeks earlier. The survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is less than seven percent, but with early detection and medical intervention, that rate jumps to 32 percent. Lenox Hill Hospital cardiologist Dr. Tara Narula joins “CBS This Morning” to discuss the warning signs.

I once saw my co worker leaning forward with his head down. I walked up and asked what’s wrong ? and he reply by saying oh nothing, I just feel very tired, my fingers are tingling. He raised his right arm and starred at it clenching his fist repeatedly. I told him you should get checked that’s not normal to feel your arm falling asleep when your standing. He said yeah i have to get checked, I’ll make an appointment. About two weeks later I received the news that he was found dead at home when he was home alone.

In the case of sudden cardiac arrest, the earlier the defibrillation takes place, the better the chance of the patient’s survival. Additionally early defibrillation also decreases the risk of permanent brain damage to the patient. When heart attacks take place outside of hospitals, it is not always easy to quickly get the patient to a hospital, or
even to an ambulance at times like these this video comes in handy

My dad passed 2 weeks ago from cardiac arrest. He had many factors such as diabetes and he had kidney failure ect. He was gone within min. Plus he was a smoker. He was just a few months shy of 60. 😞 Still can't believe he is gone.

I'm 43. I went to the doctor to tell him I've been having problems but he took one look at me and said that I was too young to have heart problems. I have had to research my own symptoms. At first my issues looked very much like a heart valve problem to me, because I knew I was breathing but the air was not circulating through my body. I struggle to catch my breath. Words are at a whisper. It feels like the blood has drained from my heart. My lungs feel sort of cold and thick like they are stuffed with cotton. Heart palpitations are erratic. It will skip, stop, start beating really fast and then do an engine sputtering out kind of beat thing. I start seeing black filling my vision. My knees go weak. I just haven't passed out yet.
Sometimes it happens without warning and for no reason. Like I'm in bed relaxing. Other times I feel like I have a hangover. Kind of sick. Nausea. Stomach hurts. Tired. Like really tired. Sometimes it feels like someone is trying to pull an artery out of my heart.
I really think it is an interesting statement the lady said that it is an electrical issue bc I have seizures. An electrical issue basically and my petit mal/absence seizures will be bad on some of those days. I'm trying to catch my breath, but not breath too fast or I'll go into a seizure. Yah. It's tricky.
On one hand, it is kind of consoling to be validated. To know what is happening to me and that it is very serious. Even if I look too young. It isn't fair to be dismissed like that. My heart bothers me like this on a regular basis. I have symptoms nearly every day and have had them pretty bad for the last 3 years.
I started having flutters as a teen. Now it is so much worse than the butterflies I felt back in the day. No. This friggin' hurts.
Thank you for posting this video. It helped me a lot. Ok? You did good.

I had cardiac arrest and died 38 minutes I had extreme tiredness hours before this event I was exhausted all I wanted to do is sleep instead I force myself to go to a gathering to meet with friends added Bible group when we had our study leaving at the end of our session I felt dizzy all I remember is everything going around fortunately the people I were with many knew how to do CPR they kept with me until the ambulance arrived 38 minutes later they couldn't find the house... I crossed over I was in the arms with Jesus I saw all my relatives my mom my dad all my grandparents clapping and cheering for my arrival it was so beautiful where I was they were setting a table just for me it was a gathering of Celebration and the sky was filled with rainbows and beautiful music and song coming out of the rainbows like a thousand angels singing a cappella sounds of music period. I was in the arms of Jesus he was so beautiful I felt so Safe in His Arms and yet he had the weight of the world in his eyes looking beyond me as if he wanted to hold the whole world in his arms and save everyone and take them to his heart he had such a great love that just went through me as if lightning had struck I then found myself at the feet of him and I saw the wounds on his feet from the cross and I was in awe and felt so humble realizing I was with Jesus I felt warm water pour over me as if it was Life coming back into me... I heard his voice and he said to me my child my child it's not your time yet that's when I received a heartbeat after 6 defibrillators I was told they couldn't get me back and when they brought me to the ambulance the last defibrillator I received a pulse... Somehow God was with me and he still has a purpose for me I still live with that not knowing when this can happen again it's been a journey during my recovery but I will say I am so glad of every day and I appreciate all the little things and I feel extremely sensitive to those that are going through hard times with this pandemic everyday could be your last so be thankful for what you have love your children love your family never have disagreements but leave yourselves with memories for them everyday is precious and someday we will all crossover one by one may this bless someone else I wasn't listening to the warning signs I was just very tired had I gone home I wouldn't be writing this today I was with people who saved my life and I thank God everyday for them and for today Amen to this

CPR with rapid use of an AED has an excellent percentage of saves. Young, healthy adults are also at risk. Even Little League are required to know CPR and have an AED in a dugout.

I'm seeing that sudden cardiac arrest is happening much more often in children and very young adults (under the age of 22). My question is are the symptoms the same in children than in adults? So far the children had no symptoms until they just dropped at school or at home. One 17yr old girl said her only issue was frequent shoulder pains but the doctors ignored it. The other younger children who survived said they felt short of breath and then immediately their hearts stopped so if that's the shortness of breath symptom there's no possible way to get help/early intervention since to them it happened just as their heart stopped.

I'm pretty sure I speak for millions of people, when I say that if I called EMS every time I had flu-like symptoms or back pain, that I'd be on the hook for over 100K a year in ambulance trips.
These doctors need much more specific criteria, so as to cut out all the false alarms.

I was having a heart attack/cardiac arrest but since there wasn't any pain & I didn't have any health issues apart from stress I didn't know it was a heart attack until it was too late & was rushed to the hospital where my heart stopped & came back to beat after electric shocks.
I have now 5 stents in my heart & I think I could have avoided that if I knew what I know now. Please learn how to respect your hearts before it's too late.

The thing about it is…I think everyone should see a cardiologist past the age of 30 and have comprehensive heart check up every 3-5 yrs…I mean to have just 5 mins to save a life…you can’t get anything done in 5 min…AND THIS AFTER you’re unconscious…YOU NEED A 2nd person to KNOW CPR AND have access to a defibrillator…we won’t know when we need a defib vest only AFTER we’re saved…there really is no chance

Did she say it strikes people in the prime of their life around the age of 65? I had no idea our prime was 65.

My Mom was 53. She called the ambulance about 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to her SCA. They got her back to the room. The nurse left the room to get a bed pan, she was not hooked to monitors and when she came back to the room was unresponsive and they called code blue. I asked these questions and they didn't see her vitals as an urgent need. My mom never complained of any problems in the month leading up to her SCA however in the week prior she started walking too much and was overly stressed. She seemed to be sitting down more often (never complained) possibly tiring easier because you never see my Mom sitting down.. But no other symptoms until the hour leading up to her SCA. I was not there with her to provide CPR (I had no clue) and that guilt will haunt me as well as the anger I have towards the lack of immediate care. This was the sweetest kindest woman I knew and my best friend. Years back my Mom mentioned she would love to have another son, she was overly fond of Blond hair and blue eyes. I have a baby now and my Mom doesn't even know her grandson. The anger and sadness I have will never fade.. I also wanted to update that they didn't see signs of a heart attack. She had normal vitals at every check up. At the hospital it was high. She was also on CIPRO. It was in her handbag. I read that it can cause long QT (fatal heart rhythm). Although not super common. She had went to urgent care feeling like she had a virus 4-5 days prior. They gave her cipro.. Urgent care could have missed something. They didn't do an ekg.. However Cipro is a drug I can't take at all. I developed cipro toxicity from it (the first and only time I took it). Side effects still linger.

Well by national standards and surveys they're only talking of patients who walk out of hospital without brain defecit. It's only considered a "save" if they have no neuro or motor deficit function loss on discharge. I'm curious to the follow up pt's down the line who aren't placed in this percentage who make it. I would like to see numbers.
