It’s incredible how these guys still have all their limbs. I’ve never seen such bad chainsaw work.

Drying out Bog Oak is the most important element of preparing this log. For more information try Adamson & Low (UK cabinet makers) They use this timber and it them took some years before they mastered the art of drying. Hamish is a brilliant cabinetmaker with an amazing CV. I am certain he would give good advice.

Sgian Dubh. Meaning is Black or Dark Knife. The meaning of black/dark is “hidden”. These small knives were often concealed in armpits or socks.

Despite the season, these men are not cold. I'd love to see a follow-up video showing this giant being crafted into its various finished products.

It’s actually amazing watching something so old being handled. It’s pure reverence

Quite amazing, thank you. I'm lucky enough to have some swamp Kauri which is approx 25'000 years old. Compared to this bog oak it looks freshly felled but that's deceiving. Put a chainsaw through it and you get the occasional spark and a very dull chain, lol.

I had to stop watching when they started with the Alaskan, it almost brought me to tears.

Just a thought ... extremely rare, high dollar lumber, cold as hell, tree is iced up and frozen solid ... maybe afford a fork lift ... a decent band saw ... wear a mask / breathing device ... I just don't get it.

Wonderful. For twenty eight years here in Australia, my business made tables from native hardwoods amongst which were Red Gum logs of similar ages also turned black. We used this for many years as inlays and decorative motiffs as it was very expensive.

A stunningly beautiful tree! even sawdust can be used from such an oak! And it is a pity that the root was not used, at least it was not shown here.

Thank you for the knowledge of Bog Wood, I had never given it much thought.
I am now very interested in finding a knife with Bog Wood scales.
Thanks for a great video.

Some smaller corrections: "real" bog wood comes from high altitude bogs, situated so it does not have contact with ground water! The only water the bogs receive comes from rain, creating a very acid heavy water condition - the same tannic situation you have when preparing leather. These bogs are exclusive to Northern Europe. Sincerely, the Historian
