Before any work on a track commences (particularly on a long established existing track), I would highly recommend running over it with a metal detector. We did this in our little woodland and unearthed a number of Roman coins and two Iron-age gold coins. There's something very special about being the first to hold something that was last held over 2000 years ago and would otherwise have been lost forever.

A film on building footpaths would be good too.

What does it mean to create a scallop shape for the edges? I wish the video had given more examples of this

That was really interesting, thanks for the video. Did you ever consider the thought of creating your own wildlife pond with all that extra, natural water running down the pathway?

After purchasing an 8 acre woodland two years ago we finally broke ground on the 18th of August. The terrain is gently sloping with to small culverts both north to south. So far 60 man hours dug and clearing ie brambles and a few trees, ready for geotex approximately 600 metres . Theres is another 500 metres to go with spaces for a large yurt. I will be laying type scalpings compacted probably about 130 - 150 mm deep and 1.5meters wide. With a few pacing places. The main criteria is to make it wheelchair accessible. As for costs im paying £ 16 per hour labour, geotex £800 fuel £ 500 stone 650 tonne £7500 . I reckon another 80 hours to finish as this includes making to bridges plus hire equipment . Toral around £14, 000 approximately ok

My favorite was #9 - building scallops along the edge to increase habitat diversity 💚

Where possible I would recommend creating tracks and paths on contour to minimise erosion from water, and integrating the use of swales and berms to better manage rain water rather than using ditches, pipes and drains to take the water "away".

Soil, water, mud, streams etc are normal. Remove such, carving artificial straight paths with alien materials and you destroy nature and the countryside, such as in this film.
