Dr. Phil talks with guests who have different opinions about tipping or giving gratuity for various services, such as a haircut, a manicure, or dinner at a restaurant. Walter admits he never tips and is completely against the entire tipping system. Jackson and Theresa, who have been working as servers, both say they believe in tipping others for a job well done. In fact, Jackson says he can even spot a bad tipper! Dr. Phil puts him to the test just to see how accurate his skills are. Then, meet Naam and Bryce who both say that modern tipping in this country has become way too aggressive. And, Etiquette Expert and Founder and CEO of Beverly Hills Manners Lisa Gashé gives Dr. Phil and his guests her views on tipping. (21057)

Tips aren't the norm in my country, and the service is good. This is just allowing restaurants to underpay people.

Sports jersey = black.

And he isn’t racist. That was a hard earned reputation.

Occasionally you might see a Latino wearing a sport jersey as well.

"wearing a sports jersey" AKA "being black"

This is spot on. If you work in the business long enough, you know. There's one thing he left out, but you'll get cancelled if you say it.

Bartended for years after serving for years. Hole in the wall dives to nightclubs to steakhouses to fine dining. Never prejudge customers, but this guy has super valid points. Thing is, other customers see how we treat other customers, even ones we read as bad tippers, so beware

The American restaurant industry is a scam. They pass the payment of staff onto the benevolence of the customer, yet the cost savings of not having to pay servers is not reflected in the price of the meal.

I don't tip prices are too high. It's not my job to pay you it's the company job

I can spot a bad/no tipper in a second. But, it's inappropriate so I won't say it.

Im from the uk, why should people tip, we are already living on the breadline here with gas and electricity prices, this is an excuse for companies not to pay there staff properly, its not our job to pay your wages, i dont get tipped in my job. They should be paid a proper wage.

Ok here's my problem with this bearded guy, he is judging how well of service he gives by his predetermined fantasy of what he thinks of customers based purely on their look of how they are dressed or maybe the person is shy....if I saw him as a server in a restaurant, I would instantly leave and tell the owners why.

Multi-millionaire Phil would want to be judged on "merit". Struggling to pay the bills? Unlikely.
Maybe the bigger point missed here is...we could just pay people a fair wage? Using basic psychology to determine if you are going to be able to pay the rent this month and eat. What happened to America? What is happening to the Dr Phil show this season...world views from the very wealthy man that lives in Hollywood? That'll help fix the country.

I am African American and a good tipper. However, because the perception is that black people are bad tippers I often get bad service.

Going to resturant in American seem like going to a torture cell.

I pay for the meal. Not for someone to bring it to me. The tip should go to the chef who prepared the dish. Never tip, never will. What does the waiter do besides bring the food to you?

Dr. Phil: “Does the service impact the tip?”
Audience: (50% hand raises)
Dr Phil: “So it does”

This is so alien to any other country. If you want extra service you are just charged more
