Building the TotalBoat work skiff - Painting on the wet edge (Episode 33)

I have been waiting a while for this, today we are going to apply our first coat of topside paint, but first we need to give our primed surface a good sanding. I'm sanding the entire boat by hand because it gives me a better feel and allows me to keep a nice fair shape. We are also going to touch up the ends of our cover boards with a chisel and some sandpaper so they can act as chock for a line. We are going to paint our topsides with TotalBoat Wet Edge Cold Cure. It's pretty cool in the Open Door Boatshop this time of year and this paint can be used down to 45 degrees F so that makes it ideal for us in this case. For me, this is one of the most fun parts of building a boat because when I apply the paint, it really lets me see the shape of the boat and how fair the hull is. I couldn't be more excited, we are getting closer and closer to putting our skiff in the water, stay tuned for our final episodes and remember to join us at the Jamestown Distributors tent sale April 22, 2017 in Bristol, RI.

Nothing cuts as nicely as a REALLY sharp chisel.
(And, in the hands of an experienced master.)

Looking good Louis! Been following from the beginning, and even though I can't wait to see it in the water, I'm sad to see the series coming to an end soon. Please keep doing what you guys do, much appreciated. Greetings from Abu Dhabi!

You are amazing with your Skills and knowledge . I just started watching your videos and I really enjoy them . But I was screaming at the screen when you used such a harsh sandpaper . And now that I see the primer as your painting it shows just how deep you went .
I've been painting since I was 10 and I'm 60 now so I would say I have a little experience . You can get a better finish by using 150 and that's even a little rough but as you said you like to really rough the surface up . But you will get the same results and get a Beautiful finish by following my suggestion . I have built a lot if things but never a boat . Being disabled I don't think I could do it now, but I just might try a scale model size . Maybe about 20 inches or so . That's how much you have motivated me . You have a Great way of teaching . And I really like how you explain things . And one thing that I really like is that you change the way you did things before a little , Alot of times people are afraid to change the way they do things . And by doing that you showed us that its not so straight forward and that you can put your personal touch on the projects we do . Looking forward to more of your projects .

Thanks for great explanation.  Working on my budget sailboat I bought.  Going to use TotalBoat Products I think.  Only paid $250 for a 22ft Helsen sailboat.  Having fun with it.  Using it as a learning experience.
