Better lenses is probably the best tip i've learned so far. Got rid of my 4-5.6 for an f/4 L and the quality is much, much better. I really like your tip about not cropping too. I still do it, but i try to minimize the cropping when possible.

I just purchased my first digital SLR last week. I stumbled upon your videos & I am so grateful. Thank you for all of the valuable information for beginners and THANK YOU for not talking down to me like I'm an idiot. Great advice, well-presented. I've learned a lot from you in a very short amount of time. I will be checking out your website, etc. And, yes, you have awesome hair. But you already knew that. ;)

Mr. Fro just got followed by me!!! Your awesome! Nice tips!

I like this guy.. he doesn't delay stuff and talk alot.. and he's not boring like those super pro photographers that lectures you in super boring slow-mo formal manner. hahahahaa

Aperture is the opening of the lens, you can adjust it to be wide or narrow (each with a specific effect to your photo). How open your aperture is measured in the 'f-number' (f1.4, f2.8, f3.5 etc) and how wide your aperture will dictate how shallow or not your 'depth of field' will become.

@9unslinger On the web site we have a ton of lightroom videos. Remember its not about getting it right in the camera that makes jpeg not the better choice in my opinion. There is a lot of work in the camera that has to go into getting the right settings for jpeg such as sharpening, color saturation, white balance and they all effect your final image and are locked. In RAW you can control those things post.

d5100 ith 18-55mm is amazing to start and the video is really good too, it helps you explore many things other 'beginners cameras' don't.

@willonce I recommend the 35 1.8 as it will autofocus on all the cameras where the 50 wont on the lower end cameras.

For Real Estate, you need a wide angled lens for the interiors, especially for tight spaces. There's the Nikon 14-24 f2.8, or you can go for the Tamron 10-24mm f3.5 - f5.6 if you plan to save money. Then you will need an external flash, like the Nikon SB-900, although you can go for the lower models. For weddings you will need a 24-70 f2.8 for the event itself and also an external flash, and prime lenses like the 50mm or 85mm f1.4 or f1.8 to get good prenup portraits.

You can take landscapes, sunsets and portraits even with the 18-55mm. The first number the '18', indicates the least zoom or how wide the lens can take, while the last number or the '55', indicates how much zoom it can do. So the 18-200mm has the longest range. So check the price of the 18-105 if it fits your budget. If you're still tight, even the 18-55mm will do. Practice on that since this is your first camera.
