I really liked Silver. He was everything Jim ever needed and wanted, and even the riches of Treasure Planet didn't mean as much to him as Jim did by the end of the movie.

The fact the Captain of a crew of murderous treasure-hunting pirates ended up being the exact wiser masculine mentor that Jim needed in his life is quite beautiful. It wouldn't really work in any other film, but in this film it's the heart and soul of the film.

Dude, holy shit, after all these years I realized that Silver actually took it upon himself to teach Jim the much needed discipline in life after finding out Jim's father never did any of that. And it's extremely ironic considering that Silver was the leader of fricking *pirates*.
I really wish I had understood this when I first saw this as a child, because I can relate to Jim on a galactic level of not having a father there to teach me the essentials in life. God I love this movie even more now.

this is probably why so many guys identified with this disney character, father ran out on him, mother works hard to get by and worries, he gets into trouble/fights, and he's looking to get out and go on an adventure.
