Arrested For Offending Islam

Soheil Arabi is in prison in Iran for insulting Islam and its prophet. He was originally sentenced to death, but his punishment was softened after incessant protests from human rights organisations.

His sentence is still obscene. He is in prison for expressing an opinion about a dead man, and part of his sentence is the compulsory study of Islam.

Soheil has been beaten by prison guards to the point of hospitalisation, and gone on hunger strike to protest the conditions of his fellow inmates. He has done all of this in the name of the free expression most of us take for granted. What will you do for him?

I'm an atheist who lives in Iran too, although I'm not very vocal about my beliefs or should i say lack of them, there's always a constant fear of getting arrested.

Well, same here in Morocco. I'm an underage atheist and homosexual, but I can only express it online. When I tried to take off the Hijab, my parents threatened to drop me out of school and imprisoned me home, as well as disowning me if I was to ever challenge their god.
On the bright side, only one year to go and I'm free :)

As an Iraqi ex-muslim, I can't find the words to thank you Alex for shedding light on this topic! While I'm not an activist, I can't share my thoughts in my country due to the obvious consequences. A few months ago I started a debate with my university's professor who is a mullah and it kinda got heated up so the next day one of the security staff of our university followed me to the dining area sat beside me and told me to mind my own business then they called my mother who is a religious person and told her that your son is venturing a wrong path so you can guess what happened after, I assume there's gonna be more questioning still and I rather stay quiet for the rest of my time in university it's a government funded university so they wouldn't hesitate to just kick me out. It's easy for westerners to just say "then why they don't do anything about it" when they are not effected by the consequences, I appreciate your work It could help alot to people whom don't have a voice.
