Finally someone breaks down the forehand slice. Such an underrated shot. Players with a forehand slice and who can also use topspin are at a higher level.

You are my Tennis guru. Apart from my trainer, your videos help me a lot to fix my mistakes. I must say your channel is one of the best among all the tennis coaching channels on YouTube.

I started using a Forehand slice after suffering a right knee tweak as well as having wrist pains. Indeed it has given me more insight into properly hitting a forehand volley and also how to improve my backhand slice. And you are absolutely right, when not careful balls will sail out a lot when returning high pace balls. Lastly, my friends have destroyed the floaty slice shots so definitely only useful when reaching for tough angle shots.

Thank you for making an instructional video on the FH slice!! I enjoy watching your lessons and tell all my friends and co-workers about your videos.

Great job as usual!

I couple of decades ago I regularly played against this player.
His best shot was, by far, an offensive sliced forehand, hit with a pace like you wouldn't believe.
The start of his swing was much higher than yours.
Then he swung downward as if his life depended on it.
The result?
A high pace, low bounce ball that skidded near the baseline, then the ball barely lost pace after the low bounce.
It drove me crazy!

Some time ago I also decided to hit a backhand/forehand slice only in a situation I really don’t have enough time for a proper topspin shot, because quite often it’s easy to counterattack against a slice shot, and by hitting it you are putting yourself in a difficult situation.

Nic, I've run out of superlatives to describe/praise your MOST EXCELLENT video lessons, sir. Not only are you extremely informative (and entertaining, especially you interacting with Shamir!), but having played at a high level yourself, your lessons are always so current, so topical.

I mean, I've watched tennis since I was a young lad - I'm so old I remember Bud Collins from back when tennis was only televised on PBS (!) so suffice to say, I've been watching a LONG TIME - and I NEVER saw someone slice on the forehand side, NEVER. Now it seems like everybody's doing it and bang! here comes a lesson from Nic on what else, the forehand slice.

Not only do you know what's hot, what's "the buzz" at this particular point in time, but YOU'VE DONE IT ALL BEFORE! So you're the perfect person to explain it to us, and thank our lucky stars, you _feel_ like explaining it to us. So thank you, sir! Thank you for your time and expertise. And for sharing it with us. I hope God/The Universe/The Holy Whatever is being kind to you and your loved ones, because - you deserve it, Saint Nic!

I can’t believe you made all the demonstrations in a wet court. Slippery court can be dangerous. Love this content as always!

Thank you. What a great coach you are.

This video is so helpful! My trainer asked me to use the forehand slice in every shot, which sounds like a wrong approach.

Thanks to telling me about Monica Niculescu. I am fascinated w/ her play style and how she wins matches at the pro level. In some videos she will hit slices to bring opponent in and then finish w/ topspin FH! The way she slices also is interesting, it looks more like a 'V' rather than a 'U'

I’ve suddenly started using a forehand slice but with a semi western grip and I can hit it as hard as a topspin almost and it’s lethal! Weird but I crushed in my match yesterday using it!

So glad I found this video. I've been trying to hit the FH slice on my own w/o instruction, and the results have been less than impressive. I can't wait to get on the practice court and put your lessons to work. Thanks so much, and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Thanks for great lesson! Do you have a video about how to deal with high balls on the forehand side?

I have a good forehand topspin which is my go to. I developed a forehand slice due to a few reasons. Short, low balls are very hard to get under for a topspin ball. It’s much easier to slice a low ball. Also, since most players don’t see this shot it’s unexpected and it moves like crazy in the air and after it hits. It also stays low. All of that makes it harder on an opponent. Also, since they’re expecting a harder topspin, they stay back, again making a harder shot for them to get to and generally they have to hit it up. I love it and it’s coming along nicely. Just gives a player another option. When I played yesterday, I hit the shot of the day which was a shot angled slice on the ad side which when it hit, it hit the line and spun beautifully to the right off the court. I’m still pumped about that shot. Worth the court time payment. HA

When catching up to a ball from behind, like in the case of a lob, I will rotate my grip on forehand a bit, helps a lot.

The interesting thing about being able to slice on both sides is that unlike topspin, it is much easier to hit sideslice on an underslice ball than a topspin. A forehand slice from the center of the baseline can basically be a slice serve that hits the service box and arcs away from the court so the opponent has to connect to the ball in the alley. If you have that on both forehand and backhand sides the area that the opponent needs to cover is huge. Aside from that, it is often more beneficial to hit that kind of shot with low speed so by the time the opponent connects, the ball is near ankle height. Since you don't need to hit with pace and can just deflect, this gives you a higher margin for error to compensate for the lower margin over the net.
