Embroidery history with OML Embroidery! No, this is not a boring old history lesson from school...this is an Embroidery history lesson. Do you know how embroidery got started? Do you know what the first embroidery stitches were? Do you know how far back in time they found embroidered items? Check out this video by Sue from OML Embroidery and learn a few fun facts about embroidery - machine embroidery and hand embroidery.

You may or may not be surprised to know that the first stitches that were found in ancient times were the chain stitch, running stitch and backstitch. Yep, from those few stitches, hand embroidery was developed! of course, hand embroidery is quite different from machine embroidery, but both styles were done in the hoop. Hand embroidery was a smaller handheld hoop - the purpose of the hoop was to keep the fabric in place, as well as pull on the fabric so you have a nice flat stitching surface. Yes, ancient embroidery is still ITH in the hoop embroidery.

Many ancient civilizations and later countries have their own custom embroidery style called folk art embroidery. Folk art embroidery can vary from country to country, some are with bright thread or bright yarn, and some have an embroidery style all their own. In this video, I give you two good examples of folk art embroidery that is handed down from ancient times.

Hand embroidery is very relaxing and rewarding. I was brought up doing it. Now I use my sewing machine to embroidery and enjoy that too. Lots of people do hand embroidery and hand quilting for that matter too.

Have you ever seen the embroidery they do in Hungary by hand? That's very impressive.

My daughter cannot sew, knit or embroider to save her life and her sons' despair when she turns up their school trousers is a picture and yes I do rescue them. I have tried so hard to get her interested but to no avail. The stately homes in England are full of magnificent rooms full of hand stitched embroidery furnishings, clothes, gloves etc., samplers embroidered by young girls and ladies in waiting to the mistress of the household, even the lady herself would embroider and mend household items and clothes. As the lady of the houshold it was considered to be an asset if you could produce exquisite pieces of workmanship and with the added benefit for the gentlewoman to show off her beautiful hands to impress the menfolk! Obviously there were tailors around, whilst in the poorer classes many a mother with her daughters would take in sewing and mending to earn enough to feed the growing family, this was also true of knitting too. Once the Industrial Revolution began in England (approximately 1730), the cloth produced in the cotton and silk mills, for example, made some very early attempts at machine 'embroidery' and although in its infancy was still expensive to buy. Hand sewn embroidery was still considered the best and only the wealthy could afford it, but the 'technology' to produce better and more intricate fabric was growing. Working conditions were terrible with young children of 6 to 7 years old being made to dodge between the machines to clean the lint off the floor and people going deaf with the noise of the machines. Life was cheap and many died in this industry from accidents, lung infections and fevers, to name a few. On that cheerful note may I thank you for this really interesting video; it has inspired me to go into my loft to search for my history books and that is no easy task!.

Sue, if that Irish pillow is like the one that my grandmother brought over with her it is made with a Crewel type yarn.

She learned to do hand embroidery and sewing starting at age 3 when she started school in England. (Approx 1893). All girls had to learn how to sew in school. My grandfather wasn't wealthy, but his girls went to a church school.

As far as a country to look at Mexico has georgous embroidery. Some of it is from the Indian tiles. Especially in the states of Uruapan, Oaxaca and Michiocan.

I enjoyed this tidbit of embroidery history. Maybe you can tell us a little more of the elaborate embroidery from the orient, ie. China, Phillipines and the types of thread used.

I love my embroidery/sewing machines. Now I can't see myself doing it by hand like they did in the "old" days! I'm sure they would have loved to have our fantastic machines, software too.

Thank you for the interesting history. I did hand embroidery years ago when I did home parties for a company called Creative Expressions. Enjoyed doing it but started to have hand issues because I did a lot of typing in my full time job. Then I discovered machine embroidery. It is nice to see faster results and gorgeous designs, but at times I miss the quiet hand embroidery time.

I believe that God may have loved Embroidery because it was in the instructions He gave for the making of the first tabernacle and for Aaron and his sons clothes. Maybe around 1445 BC? Exodus chapters 26-39. ❤️

Not a “sweat shop”. Terrible analogy. Very insulting even.
