I'd say your advice to not be a "slave to the reference" is a bit more advance drawing advice IHMO. Beginners will benefit a lot from learning to draw what they actually see, not what they think they see. A lot of people struggle when they start out because they aren't actually looking, but they are drawing what they think is there.
Once you are more comfortable with really seeing and drawing what is there in the reference, can you more freely interpret the reference like Diego is suggesting in this video. So a bit of training to get to the fun part.
