Holden Calais SLEEPER

We first featured Shaun’s Holden Calais back in 2012 where the VP was powered by a sneaky Holden 5L turbo engine running on straight LPG fuel. Whilst the car may still look the same, changes underneath include a boost switch from turbo to blower in the way of a Cadillac sourced LSA crate engine. Shaun has completed all of this at home including the change to a Turbo400 transmission. Tuned by Accelgarage the current combo is barely tickled and puts out around 440 rear wheel horsepower. This was Shaun’s first time at the track and the results surprised even himself.

1993 Holden VP Calais | #LSTHEWORLD
GM LSA 6.2L crate engine

TH400 3-spd trans, 3000rpm stall converter
Factory IRS, 3.45 diff gears, 255mm radials
Power: 330kW / 442hp @ wheels
Built all at home, tuned by Accelgarage

Some people would say "ew an ls swap", but it's a gm engine in a gm car, plus, it's a freakin' LSA. I approve of this swap.

This is a real street car by definition I love it. Sedate looking, crate motor on pump fuel so could be driven daily and runs 10s. What's not to like?

That's an awesome result, relatively cheap, something you can drive everyday with all the amenities being a Calais, doesn't draw unwanted attention and run 10s. Credit to the owner.

That's bloody unreal. A simple recipe with maximum results. VP Calais only weighed around 1350kgs, probably a bit more with that engine, but with 330rwkws and a good box, that seems about right. That's why VL turbos were so much fun, 300rwks and you'd be in the 10's. They were about 100kg lighter again.

Good work keeping it under the original bonnet!

How awesome. The cars going to be pretty reliable, runs 10’s and nothing special needed to maintain the car. It’s good to know people are still building things like these at home.

Wicked engine note - love that blower whine

Love it. Really is a sleeper. The LPG badge would be making me think slower than average.... sort of makes me wish it had the badge of some of the Asian market ones with 2.0 or 2.6L engines rather than the 5.0L V8....

Change the crank pulley, throw in a set of injectors plus a cam, easy 9's.. nice one mate!

Oldsmobile sold a couple of cars called the Calais here in the States. They were FWD, usually 4 cylinder or 60 degree V6 powered. Some were road raced successfully in the 90's when GM came out with the Quad 4 cylinder engine, that could do 200+ hp N/A back when Honda largely didn't have B motors in the US market. In fact the Calais 442 FWD car was fairly quick stock, Google it.

Considering the radials had 28psi in them he did VERY well

I dig it!! Those stock wheels are cool. It would be cool to see this car go 9's, a little nitrous maybe? 😎

It gets up on the converter nicely out of the hole

I personally love that it's Ls swapped. The only cars that really shouldn't be ls swapped are rx7s
