Panasonic GH6 for Photography – Is It Worth It?

The Panasonic GH6 is widely praised for its video capabilities, but how does it perform as a photography camera? While primarily marketed toward filmmakers, the GH6 offers a powerful photography experience that shouldn’t be overlooked. With its 25.2MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, it delivers impressive detail, excellent dynamic range, and vibrant colors, making it a solid choice for stills as well as video. The lack of an anti-aliasing filter ensures maximum sharpness, which is a huge advantage for photographers who want crisp images straight out of the camera.

One of the standout features is its high-resolution mode, which captures up to 100MP images using sensor-shift technology. This makes it a fantastic tool for landscape, studio, and product photographers who need extreme detail. The improved autofocus system, while still contrast-based, is faster and more reliable than previous GH models, making it viable for action and wildlife photography when used with Panasonic’s fast lenses.

The in-body image stabilization system, rated up to 7.5 stops, allows for handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds, which is great for low-light and street photography. The GH6’s robust build, weather sealing, and fully articulating screen also make it an excellent companion for travel photographers. While it doesn’t match full-frame cameras in terms of depth of field control, its versatility, compact system, and professional-grade features make it a strong contender for photographers looking for a hybrid camera that excels in both video and stills.

Thanks Grant, some good quick tips and things to consider here. What you mention also gives reason to consider the merits of having a dedicated camera body for photography and another dedicated body for Video. Having one body rigged for video, say with a cage, PL fader, audio rig, brace or gimbal, matte box, and etc saves a lot of time and fumbling over using one body for both. For events I typically had a stills and video camera and packing two full-frame bodies can be a lot but, with smaller, lighter M4/3 bodies and lenses it's pretty manageable.

ACE, i could not agree more, your photos are looking even better with this camera, and although the GH7 has phase detect, the images from the GH6 Beat the GH7, and Panasonic in one interview admitted that there's a trade off as, as the phase detect uses spare pixels for measuring apparently , cheers, great video Grant . 👍🏻☺

How do you feel about the dynamic range of the GH6? As you don't mention it I guess you haven't experienced it as limiting?

Technical tests seem to indicate 2 stop less dynamic range on the GH6 compared to the G9II.

So not only PDAF but also dynamic range would to me make the G9II the obvious choice for stills. But I own the G9II and not the GH6, so I am biased.
