ART TIP: How to deal with the 'ugly phase'

Thank you so much! I always get right to that ugly phase when all the tones have been laid out and im itching to blend them but then i loose all the contrast so im just sitting there hating it whilst piling colors- so this helps a lot

I usually enter the ugly phase of painting when it's 11pm on a Sunday, I've been painting on and off for two hours, and I have work at 9am the next day (because, as an artist, i can't just paint if it's light out!) So I usually take this as a sign that I should go to sleep and resume tomorrow after work. I say this, but I usually only get back to painting once the weekend comes.

Unintentionally, this routine helped me learn the value of taking a step away-- or an entire week away rather, from my painting, though it has caused me to only be able to finish a painting every month and a half or so from idea conception...

I’m very hesitant to leave when I’m feeling frustrated or I won’t come back to it bc I know how it’s making me feel but it is important to look at it with fresh eyes when you don’t know what to do
