I started typing my reply on the title. And then you said the same stuff
The phones have gotten so good that as long as they continue to add standard camera functions, they are a good alternative to those wanting to learn/start in photography. I also think it would be very hard to build up a phone to do things like astro photography.

As an iPhone 15 Pro Max user, I agree the camera (lens/sensor/processing) has come a long way. So much so that it was the only thing I used to capture vacaction photos over the summer and I was very happy with the majority of the results. It was the convenience of having it in my pocket and being able to capture, making quick edits and share them with my family/friends that did it for me. And to your point, the technology will only improve.

Having said that, all the pics and videos I took took a toll on the phone's battery and storage. If I had to do it again, I'd probably bring a smallish mirrorless to do more of the heavy lifting for photos and the phone for casual snaps.

Looks like the iphone 16 pros will be getting a 48 mp sensor on the ultra wide lens too now. Then the iPhone 17 pros next year will add a 48 mp sensor for the tele camera as well so all 3 lenses will then have 48mp sensors. Which lens would you prefer to get the 48mp sensor on next? The ultra wide or tele? For me I’m glad the ultra wide is getting it next as I use that lens much more than the tele.

The secret of using iPhone is to lower exposure whenever you take a picture, iPhone always blow the highlights of you don’t

I do have the 15 Pro Max
I kinda expected to get big results out of it
But I was not satisfied 100% with the results specially when it comes to the zoom lens
But the main 24 mm is really good and it’s worth using for most types of photography
Mobile photography is growing year after year and it’s going wide ..

I'm not going to lie here but one of my top 3 images that I've taken was with an iPhone, not sure what model it was but it was an iPhone. The iPhone and back when instagram was a photography app exclusive to Apple is what got me into photography.

What I did regarding "Portrait RAW files" is just using the RAW mode, make my edit and then add AI Blur within Lightroom. With the 48mp files it looks quiiiite amazing!! :))
With the quality I got out of this combo I even thought about leaving my Q3 at home for everyday stuff.

I think the new pixel phone has IA integrated to the camera app, so it'll be coming to iphone in a few years.

Also: some weeks ago I went on a balloon ride and didn't want to switch lenses while dangling thousands of feet off the ground and didn't have my zoom lens on me, so shot long focal lengths on my mirrorless and wide on my iphone. I was very happy with both. Phones came a long way.

My iphone has definitely swayed me from jumping on the 100v/100vi train.

The satellite messaging capabilities will take out the need for GPS units like Garmin. The photography quality is exceptional, I still like looking into a view finder

That’s just me tho

i have an iphone 12 mini (rubbish camera, sensor, processing) and a fuji x-h1 + x100v, all of which i haven't used in fuckin months... i'm about to sell all of said gear and get a phone with a decent camera. phones are so good now and all i do these days is take casual photos when i'm out and about or on road trips, whatever. i don't need more... even though i enjoy handling a fujifilm camera... but i shall see how much i will actually miss it eventually... maybe not at all? who knows. but the phone's always with you. it should have a good camera if your a keen photographer.

Lightroom mobile already has selective blur mode, that works much better and more natural than iphones portrait mode, so i see no reason why you would like to have Raw portrait image, when you can just have Raw and add right amount of blur thant you wnat

Iphone photos are oversharpened, i usually just snap a jpg and pull the clarity slider down in lightroom when editing. Using a mist filter never crossed my mind 😅
