My Primary Complaint with Signal

While Signal offers incredible privacy & security for countless threat models & use-cases, it has one shortcoming for users needing secrecy when they use the messenger.

What a lot of commenters are missing is that many abuse victims STILL LIVE WITH THEIR ABUSERS. They can't get away yet--no independent money, no support network left (abusers work hard to isolate them), young kids at home w abuser, etc. They absolutely need a secure way to communicate w help on the outside. A Signal notification to their husband, boyfriend, etc. could be CATASTROPHIC. Thank you for alerting ppl to this major flaw.

*Been saying this for years but if you even mention ANYTHING negative about Signal, the sheep on forums (especially Reddit, RIP) will hound you and tell you you're wrong.* Thanks for making a video about it. The only 2 other issues are the phone # requirement, and the fact that it's a central server and you can't verify what they're doing behind the scenes.

How about just get rid of the phone number requirement. That would fix this and the issue of having to disclose your phone number.

This is also My biggest concern with Signal. I understand the economics of why this seems great to them, but its an awful idea and even without being in danger, I Do Not want this happening!

Never considered this issue before, definitely a valid concern.

Pointless feature that jeopardises privacy, users can just message all contacts on Signal to say they've just joined, IF, they choose to.

We don't need Signal to suck our eggs for us.

Not only security risks, there are other basic things which have been missed by developers. Unlike WhatsApp where we can send multiple documents (like PDFs) by selecting them in file manager. Signal can't do that. We have to send it individually and that takes a lot of time.

This is so unbelievable that signal didn't work on this. I even mailed them about this, but no response.

This in just one of many things that are not good in the application.

I've just given up on Signal, just wasn't getting notifications through. Which pretty much made it useless.

Why are we even putting up with this BS in the first place? The phone number requirement is in itself a huge problem, this notification issue is also critical, and all that stupid crypto shit is also unwanted. Someone needs to just make a fork of signal that removes all this CRAP but keeps all the functionality and security the same as upstream. I’d do it myself but I’m still learning how to program.

As a workaround don't allow Signal to access contacts until you've turned that setting off.

Did you try Simple X? And make video please about Nostr. Both of them are great for freedom tech and against censorship
