Finland has planned this for over half a century.
People forget that Finland makes some of the best mobile artillery units in the world and export the Patria to a shopping list of countries.
They also forget that they have long range artillery pointing directly at St Petersburg.
If Russia attacks, Finland will repay in kind.

A few years ago I worked with a guy from Finland. He was telling me about how no one truly understands how much Finns HATE russia and when russia attacks (not if) Finland will retaliate with a "violent vengance" (his exact words) russia could never imagine.

As a member of the Finnish Marines, reserves;
Strictly speaking, Finland doesn't NEED NATO.
Sure, being part of NATO helps, but even without it, we could hold the line. Much is made of that 1340 km of border with Russia, much less said about the fact that only about 100 - 300km of that border is easy ground for tanks, APCs etc., the prefered arms of Russia. The rest are forest and lakes, good luck getting through those alive... Those 100-300km of easily traversible ground is, in turn easily saturated and mauled by the largest artillery capacity in Europe, which happens to be located in Finland.
