My aunt bought a 0.9 Ypsilon new, back in 2014. It wasn’t the most refined of vehicles, but surprisingly, it was always reliable. She got a Forfour last year, whilst it has far more creature comforts as you stated. However, it has been back in the garage a few times. All warranty work. But inconvenient

I am older but I only have a learner permit and I was quoted 1080 per year for an mx5 from 2007. I`d say that is pretty nice. The car is fun with 158 hp. Someone said in the comments that a 325ti (the compact e46) would be good and cheap to insure. I had a quote of a minimum of 1440 on it at the cheapest. Also, the mx5 would cost you about 2k to purchase.

I know this is older, but I had a 2005 Citroen C3 and I paid more for it (I had to buy top up miles) on my black box but only a few hundred, I drove it 10 month and then I got an E60 520d, cheap on insurance. Don’t have a years no claims have been driving 11 month and it’s 150 a month, should add that to the list bud, great content
