Best D&D Starter Set in 2023

The essentials kit does seem like the one to get, never played D&D but this is one seems like the one I need.

I'm still a big fan of the first DnD starter set.

The best set I have seen is the Pathfinder beginner set. Comes with color coded dice, double sided map dungeon with adventure, dozens of cardboard miniatures for monsters and pcs, rule books for both the game master and players, and beautiful pregenerated characters for the included dungeon. WotC should release something like that.

I own the first Starter set and the Essentials set, and while I agree with your points and rationale behind your recommendation, I think combining the two will enhance the experience even more. The adventure in the Starter is really well written, and after reading it, I'm itching to DM a group through it. Having the players generate their own characters instead of using the pregens is as you say a central part of the D&D experience.

3:16 the essentials kit doesn’t have premade character sheets, you have to make them yourselves, just saying.

Jared did a great job introducing me to the game, now I am a badass Tortle Barbarian named Sheldon. He is the best Dungeon Master I've ever met.
He is also the only one I know xD

I have the strangers thing starter set, and think of giving that a try with my daughter and wife. Have you tried that one at all?
