Why you should take more risk in your tech career | Interview with Sly Gittens

Contact Sly:

Bio:
Ever since I was a kid, I have been drawn to technology. It’s been the driving force in my career to keep that passion alive. There have been four fundamental characteristics I strive for, and because of these, I have been able to drive my ambition and success continuously:

💥 Taking complex technical information and making it palatable for my intended audience.
💥 Communication, whether it’s across functions or cultures, I strive to understand my audience and deliver a simple and compelling message every time.
💥 Leadership. I’m well known for getting people excited about a common goal and harnessing that energy to drive impact.
💥 I am a lifelong learner, ever-curious about the world, and committed to personal/professional development for myself and those around me.
💥 In 2020 I launched the Women In Technology interview series. I am constantly inspired and encouraged by the women in my life, and my two-year-old daughter is my driving force for creating this series. I want her to grow up in a world where she can look up to women pioneers in their field, be influential in their industry, and keep moving forward no matter the obstacles in their way. That’s why I have created this “WIT” series.

Du'an keeps doing it! Bringing nothing but that application that you can use in your life. Sly hit on plenty gems but the one that stood out to me was "soft skills." I did not realize the room for improvement I needed when it comes to communicating with people. Sly has given me hope and I plan on working to better my skillset to allow me to advance in IT. Shout out to Du'an and Sly!!!

Great video! I agree that soft skills are important. I think this has held me back, as I tend to focus on technical skills.

Wake up early to work on goals.
Use audio books.
Check to see if your company pays for certification.
Look for mentors in areas you want to learn.

Thank you Du'an and Sly

I could've sworn that I had commented on this... This really was a great interview. I love his story and love this message. LOT of gems in this one, especially for letting your time and money work for you. That's certainly where I'm at with it.

Exactly. How I got my IT job was my professor giving me the opportunity to be his replacement at one of his jobs. That opened the door for me and that position has taught me so much in 1 year. Now I can take what I learned and move to the next goal.

Some seriously good advice right here! Well done gents! Keeping track of your personal career ROI is such an underrated concept. Wish more people would take heed. I enourage my staff all the time to be very intentional about what they choose to spend time, money and energy learning. Not everything is worth your time...so pick the things that generate tangible ROI to your career. sub+

Is there a community discord? Or do people mostly used LinkedIn in the community?
