Nick, my friend had the same problem with the xp, in our telegram group someone said that it was because the game had exceeded the number of notifications for that day (she open the gifts at midnight) and that's why the notification didn't show. She was recommended to put a lucky egg after 9am the next morning. She did it, and it worked.

It's cool we get Smeargle shiny but I'm also not a big fan of these on/off shinies. They could just reduce the shiny rate to something like 1/500 after the event, but boost it again during future events.
