The first story is why each store should have its own server setup; if internet goes down, you can at least continue taking sales (maybe cash only... but that's better than nothing). The "cloud" is nice, but the very basic things REALLY need to be able to be done without it.

I have a light switch, but if the electric company doesn't get money, my light bulb won't light.

Years ago I worked at a small cell phone company, a brand new sales employee called me up asking for access to a file they didn't have permissions for 🚩 and when I refused they started the name calling 🚩 then they called the night boss who hired her after saying she was some nice eye candy amd he called screaming at me to give her what she wanted, I refused amd pointed out all the red flags. He went ahead and gave her the permissions. I put in my two week notice saying the company was going to die, she took the names and numbers of people whose contracts were coming due and gave it to her aunt who worked at another small company and they called up the customers and got them to switch, less than a year later the company folded.

Analogy I would have used for the ‘I should get free internet’ story is that you have a car, you have a key but you still need to pay for fuel.

Story 1: The surest way to slow down the repair process is to keep pestering the techs while they are trying to effect the repair

I worked on major outages for a larger company. A division had a network outage due to a cable cut. It was in the middle of a busy intersection and the city would not allow it to be repaired until the weekend. We asked why they didn’t have redundancy? Well, it cost too much. Yea, not our problem. I got to retire early when we eliminated most of the major outages by insisting that all critical infrastructure be redundant.

No Loyalty. I was a senior developer at a computer software company. We would quote on systems typically $100K to $500K and continually fail. This changed significantly when it was discovered that the relatively new managing director was a close friend of the owner of the winning copmpetitor !! I subsequently set up on my own and had a director of one of my clients tell me that he had been offered $150, 000 in any account he chose to name if he bought a computer from the competitor. Luckily he was smart enough to realise that it was my perconally designed copyright software that mattered not whose box it was on.

The cable box cracking was probably illegal. I half-a remember a story about people who would use some kind of modifications to get free channels. They were caught when a great promotion was offered on the tv channels that turned out to be a trap- it was broadcast on frequencies that were only picked up by these modified channels.
Yes monopolies suck and should be banned if they aren't already but well... it is what it is.

To be fair, to a two year old a C128 does kind of look like a toilet.

Yes, those forest fires are pretty bad. About 160 fires, with over 100 still not under control. Hopefully, the cooler time of the last few days and some rain should help a bit.
Don't call your IT guy when your ISP is down and have all hands on deck to resolve the problem. Then, they need to take the time to do it right and not rush it. Otherwise, it won't work correctly, or fail again pretty soon.

Hello, my friend! I worked in Cble TV engineering back in the ''80s. The reason for only one cable TV compony was the construction and operating costs. Two or more were possible, and in a few towns this was done. The customers had to pay a much higher monthly bill, because of fixed operating costs whether there was 1% or 100% of their area paying for service.Half the customers or less put many of these overbuilt systems out of business.
Speaking of stupid customers, one channel at our largest system was carrying the old CBS Arts channel, which CBS shut down. This idiot would call and scream that he was guaranteed that channel 'Per my contract!'. Not only did the 'contact' not even list the channels it as a no contact, monthly service. He demanded that we bring it back, or "I'll put you out of business!" You can't sell media doesn't exist, He demanded that our franchise be revoked. only to discover that we would have one year to remove our lines and equipment, then another nine to fifteen months for another company to build a new system due to an industry wide shortage of new equipment and contractors..
When word got out about him, he quickly shut up and hid.

It is always fun when the customer has no plans for outages. If their site is so critical that it can not afford an outage then it should have a backup that does not follow the same path as their primary.

If I'm trying to help a Senior and they start screeching at me, then I do both...

I deliberately Antagonize them while simultaneously stop helping them while still looking like I'm TRYING to help them)...

😄😁😆😅😂🤣

Internet out story: If you can't take payments, etc., you close the store. Clean, check inventory, stock shelves, go over paperwork for filing with the internet later, etc. Essentially, do everything else you normally don't have time for or have to stay late to do until the internet is back up. Good grief people, it's not that hard!

I've dealt with many computer departments who didn't know enough to know that they were causing the problem. However, in my last IT position I was the only one in the department, so I had no one to blame but myself.

Being from the west where we've fought through many years of drought and subsequent wild fires, it amuses me to hear the horror from the eastern states when they get smoke blowing in from distant fires. Of course it's worse back there because that's where all of the reporters live! LoL
