As an American I will say not every thing is defined by armed force and economy. India has a wonderful culture and is the largest democracy in history. And achieved this through great struggle and sacrifice.

I see alot of comments mentioning Afghanistan. (Im not from the U.S but I do study foreign relations) Dont forget that the US military won basically every military engagement they encountered. They wiped out the initial Taliban regime and installed a new one, trained it, armed it and supported it for 20 years. The U.S lost 2400 soldier in 20 years, wich is incredibly low for a war this long and this scale. But the U.S had no more political will and alot of resistance against the war back at home to carry on the war as they whitnessed a corrupt Afghan state, and all the money they poured in beeing stolen by corrupt officials. The afghan people lost their trust in their government and no longer wanted to fight for them, so alot of disgrunteled afghans shifted their sympathies towards the taliban. But saying they "got beat" by the Taliban is plain wrong. Dont forget that the U.S and Britain lost 9000 men on D-Day on Omaha beach on the first day and it wasnt a big deal for the war, simply because the political will to fight back at home was strong. Politics and economics is everything in a modern war. The afghan intervention was a misstake and it took 20 years to realise it.
