Fun fact: Toby never said that Frisk's gender is up to interpretation... but he did say their skin color was and thats half of the reason he made their skin yellow (the other being a simpsons reference)

The reason they are referred to as they/them, is probably because they're supposed to be a player self insert. Like, look at how average they look. Not too feminine, not too masculine, average length hair, average body proportions. They are the personification of average, so everyone can feel represented by them when playing the game. At least i'm pretty sure it's that simple.

I think it's fine to have an different interpretation of Frisk's gender, just be respectful if other people don't have the same.

From my experience with Undertale, it seems that the Monsters call Frisk they/them because they don't really know their gender, not specifically because Frisk is non-binary.

And considering they don't even know something as basic as their name during 99% of the game, I think it's not that far-fatched of an assumption.

Kris is another story, since the people around them do know Kris, and they still use they/them. So I feel like Kris is more canonically non-binary than Frisk, if that makes sense.

But in my opinion, it's also fine to interpret Kris' gender another way. The interpretation I gave is mine and isn't confirmed or anything.

If you wanna see Kris as a boy or a girl and make a story where they have that gender, then go ahead. Same for Frisk. It doesn't hurt anybody. And does it really count as erasure these two don't really have a confirmed gender ?

Even if Toby didn't actually say their gender was up to interpretation I'm going to still go with that because I have three different versions of Frisk and they all go by different pronouns

The community says the player can choose for 2 reasons.

1: Its a theory because Chara is basically just short for Character (Which is confirmed) and you can make the character the way you want


2: Its your fucking game, you paid for it, you can do/say whatever you want, so my Frisk is an Walmart bag

Brazilian portuguese doesn't have neutral pronouns so in the brazilian version Frisk does has pronouns but it's changes every run.

I think people know what Frisk's gender or lack of gender if we're going by non-binary/agender is and pronouns are it's their biological sex that people argue about was they born female or male, are they intersex or transgender if so what kind that is where the debate comes from

Of course if question if Frisk is AFAP or AMAP that's where the real debates in fandom is abd those who get mad if people even questioned or have headcanon that Frisk born one way or the other
