How can you know what Bible study tools you should buy and which ones you shouldn't buy? Online reviews for Bible study tools are often not very helpful, putting you off good resources, or making you think bad resources are good. In this video, I'll share my 4 steps for selecting good bible study books and resources that you'll use all the time.

Resources I recommend or mentioned:
Murray Harris: Prepositions and Theology in the Greek New Testament

Steven Runge's Discourse Grammar of the Greek New Testament

MacArthur: Because the Time is Near (Devotional Commentary)

The Word and the World (Old Testament Survey)

Daniel Block: Ezekiel NICOT Commentary

Gavin Ortlund: Finding the Right Hills to Die On

Systematic Theologies to Start with
Grudem: Systematic Theology (2nd Edition)

MacArthur and Mayhue: Biblical Doctrine

W. G. T. Shedd: Dogmatic Theology

Wonderful advice! When I was a teenager, a trusted mentor of mine hammered into me the importance of a doctrinal foundation. You brought back some great memories in this video. Appreciate your ministry, Darryl!

Thank You for your great video. Have you reviewed the UBS' "UBS Translator’s Handbooks – New Testament (20 Volumes)" ?

It's interesting at the beginning you talk about someone you know who is in a church where he has some theological differences. I am in the same boat right now, and am praying about what to do. It's not an issue of any primary doctrine, but it is challenging because of relationships. I am starting a program on theology, and in order to be a member of the church I have to agree with all the points in the statement of faith. I was sad when I found this out, I am not disruptive in my difference of interpretation and don't discuss views contrary to the pastor to people at church, though I have discussed it with the pastor. I guess its just interesting that the story came up as I learn about Biblical resources, and it's something I am dealing with right now.

Thank you for the videos they are very helpful for me as a student starting out.

I would also recommend The Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, The NLT Illustrating Bible, The Complete Jewish Study Bible, The Holy Land Illustrating Bible, a good Bible Dictionary, a solid basic study Bible like the ESV, a devotional version like She Reads Truth Bible, a basic journaling version like the CSB Notetaking Bible, and the Archaeological Study Bible along with a good Bible Atlas.

By far the book " what hills to die on" is the best book I have read this year thank you for the book suggestion!

'Christian Theology' by Shirley Guthrie
Is an excellent survey of Reformed Theology from a Barthian perspective

Personally as an Anabaptist pastor I recommend 'Becoming Anabaptist' by J. Dennys Weaver as another theological survey.

I just bought Harris' book. Great read so far. Decker is great as well.
I also got the New Readers Lexicon of GNT by Burer, Miller. helps me !! 67
I like getting the reviews from Daryll on Greek books. Get it right the 1st time.

This is why I goto WTS Books and RHB books to find whats the best for buying solid books.
I goto AMZ and hope I find the same book/s for better prices if need be.
What I find is Way to many Sellers are not up front on conditions for books.
And the shipping methods are getting Cheap. So I get too often books damaged by USPS
when a seller puts a large book in one of those plastic bag mailers. Cheap bubble bags. Bad idea.

I also am finding that sellers will not go thru books as to condition and just wing it as to what
may be or not as to condition - be it HiLite/writing/notes or from Acceptable to New, how
often the book is not. Bummer -
I just bot a book that said VGC it May have HiLite - is it so tough to look -
It was a mess of 18pp of HiLite colors. Is it so hard to go thru it before it is sold?

I do as a seller for 8yrs. I check all my books and tell all up front.
No well maybe its this condition, but I am to lazy to look. Have some sellers I have listed NO BUY FROM.
Getting to where I buy from WTS and RHB and Baker for expensive books. If I want top condition books.
Pay more but I get a New book and no guessing as to what is its condition when I get it.
They stand behind their books and have good SVC. Shipping etc. Amz is not, Ebay is getn $$$

My 2c worth - Great video. Maybe the workbook? will see. THANKS Darryl.

Hello, I am a Christian and I Really want to understand the original meanings of the scripture, specifically in the New Testament. I have watched a few of your videos and really want to know what books I can purchase that help me learn New Testament Greek and are great for studying the Bible even If it's in a different version.

Even in academic journals, book reviews often tell you more about the reviewer than the book.

I am glad I buy most of my books in electronic format via Logos, since they allow for a full refund within 30 days and will simply delete the resource from my library.

Don’t take your resource advice from random people’s reviews on Amazon (or any site). Too many people with strong bias or no discernment still leave unhelpful or even false reviews.
