Nikon Z50 II Bird Photography with 600mm f/6.3 PF

I used my Nikon Z50 II and my new Z 600mm 6.3 PF VR to photograph birds. I started out looking for songbirds and, after having some success, I went to the wildlife refuge to work on Sandhill cranes. It was a nice morning of bird photography with this ultra-light setup.

The branches which you call terrible are actually quite good, they add to a 3D look and show the bird in its natural habitat 👍🏼

Love that little Ruby Crowned Kinglet. Great capture…they’re such active little clowns.

Phil, beautiful photos. I love that lens and it works well with an extender on your Z8 - love it. I like the birds tucked into the brush - as long as i can see one eye. So many awesome treasures in there. ❤❤

That kinglet was a beauty! I’m glad you got it to settle for a shot for a second! They are always on the move it seems.

Thumbs up for sure, one of my favorite shots of this series was of the crane in the grass, it almost seemed like it was a ghost.

I use the 600PF with the Z 50II it’s a great lightweight setup!

I use the Z 400mm f/4.5 lens with the little Z500II and find it is a perfect setup as it is an effective focal length of 600mm. For me, shooting at 900mm really limits shooting options so if I expect to need the longer focal length, I use the Z50II with the Z 180-600mm to give me the ability to shoot with shorter focal lengths.

Great lightweight setup Phil you would be much happier now back in the Nikon system it is now far more suited to your photography l feel. I would love to go back myself but there just a few Canon features l not prepared to give up yet, enjoy.

Just like others have already noted, the branches and twigs—although seemingly "cluttering" the real estate of the photograph—add an environmental touch that is too often missing from more controlled type of shots taken from a blind. So, there's an appreciable silver lining to this compositional cloud :-).

Phil, enjoy the new lens. I have been using it with my Z8 and love the combination, light and very sharp.

Hi Phill, I was wondering, did you notice the lack of ibis impact the image quality with this lens, compared to the z8? Did you find the z50 ii need a tripod to get good images?

Thanks so much!❤

That lens has me considering jumping ship to Nikon. Z8 plus that len and some sort of 24-70mm would be a great simple setup for pretty much everything. Great shots as usual!!!

Great shots! Looks like a great camera / lens combo. How would you compare it to the 180-600mm?

If you want the most compact high performance combo for birding that looks to be it.
That is a beautiful but very expensive for the average person lens, great results!
Do you notice any difference in picture quality between that and the 180-600 Nikon lens ?
From what I can gather they are both very sharp for one thing but I would like the versatility of the zoom and the lower price although it is bigger .
