How To Charge Nest Thermostat

In this video we teach you how to charge your Nest Thermostat. There is a port on the back of your thermostat that allows you to charge your Nest Thermostat if it has low battery.

Typically if your Nest has been working, but the battery is low while it's installed it means that you need to install a common wire like we show in these videos:

If your Nest battery is low or needs a charge it also could mean that you have an issue with your HVAC system. Most HVAC systems will automciatlly shut down if a unsafe condition is detected and this shutdown turns off the power to the Nest which in turn will typically drain the battery.

If you are having a common wire issue, charging your Nest up to get you another day or two of use can be a great way to keep your heating or cooling while waiting to get the common wire installed or calling a professional.

Appreciate the effort, but TWO important items:
1) Don't confuse people. KNOW what kind of USB connecter ("micro" in this case) your talking about FIRST.
2) You didn't explain how we would know when it's FINISHED CHARGING. You didn't think that was vital information?

I felt like 'baby's first questions' with this. Didn't know the nest Device could come off the wall. Ours doesn't have a live power feed to the unit so we have to charge it every couple weeks it looks like. Gave your vid a thumbs up!!! Thanks

Charge it for 5 to 10 mts if the battery is not too drained. Check technical info and in the bottom should list battery level which should be above 3.7 for a healthy batt.

I have a common wire but it still says I have low power. Any thoughts as to why?

How do you know when it’s fully charged??? You left this essential part out!
Mine keeps blinking even after 2 hours and as soon as I reattach it to the base it says battery low

what happens if you disconnect the Nest while AC is ON, or while AC is OFF but active?

My thermostat was working with my central air system for over a month and a half, just now it's saying it's low battery. Could it just need to be charged every month or so?

My heat and fan wouldn’t turn on when thermostat is set on Heat Mode but only cool mode. Could less charge be an issue ?

This was exactly the video I needed - my nest gave me an error message for the first time ever and I didn't realize that I had to pull it off the wall and charge it for a couple of hours.

Just FYI, there is USB-A (most common/largest usb), mini-usb (common with older cameras/electronics, looks like a hat), micro-usb (this one, smaller/smoother shape than mini-usb), and USB-C (newest, elliptical shape that lets you plug in either way)

I charged it for a couple hours the day before, then again had the same issue. Last night I charged it again, then out it back on the wall, and had the ac run all night...because I figure iI would not turn it back after I had it running all night and now its charged and it didn't turn off. Could this be right..the more it runs the more it charges!!

You only have to charge it every 2-3 years unless you have a lot of power outages, then might be a good idea to give it a charge more often..also the cable he is using is a standard micro usb cable, just plug it into any standard charging brick like the alexa echo or most any cell phone usb wall plug. Also with all the coming economic issues and power issues it wouldnt hurt to get an inverter generator for your home and some heavy gauge extension cables so if you do lose power you can have backup. Just make sure you run it in a secure place outside so you aren't exposed to carbon monoxide fumes and run cables inside, also dont run when its raining. :)

So my first nest had a problem with the wifi then after with this low battery problem. It says low battery anytime. Google replaced it under warranty. I ran it overnight to charge but it didn’t run. We were very cold. I checked this morning and the thermostat was dead.
I never had this problem, the first thermostat was charging. Not sure what else i should do.

Dunno why everyone is "freaking out" about this guy's video. If you just Google "how do I charge my Nest learning thermostat" you can click on the link to Nest and they tell you all you need to know. This video is just a little more helpful "visually" is all. Nest answers "all" the other questions you have about "their" thermostat. This guy didn't "build" the thing. He's just being helpful and showing you how "he" chargef "his." Yeesh. Calm down folks.

I wish that would be provision and enough room on the backing plate to have that USB constantly plugged in. That way. All the modifications to connect the c wire would be unnecessary if you have open walls like I do in a garage
