I don’t think it was burnt, I think they use what you call bittersweet chocolate, like they use the heavy cocoa powder in the chocolate cookies, this gives the cookie a bitter taste that you interpret as burnt. Bitter is obviously something you are sensitive too, a lot of super tasters can’t manage bitter, hot or sour tastes as it overwhelms their tastebuds
