The API Product Owner Portal: Completing the Self-Service Puzzle in API Management

In large corporations, the internal API Management platform must balance rapid execution and stakeholder flexibility with adherence to a robust governance framework that upholds both organizational and security standards.
To this end, the central API team should focus on creating a self-service platform that caters to all API Management personas. This platform would encompass established components like a Developer Portal for client app developers, as well as ready-made tools and CI/CD pipeline components that empower API developers to independently create and deploy APIs.
However, the enablement journey does not stop here—the API Product Owner role is also critical for success. Tasks such as taking ownership of APIs, managing application access requests, and ensuring governance compliance for their API products should remain outside the purview of a central API team.
This presentation will outline the concept and provide detailed insights into a functional API Product Owner Portal, an integral part of the internal API Management platform at OMV AG, one of Austria’s leading industrial corporations.
