There is absolutely no shame in losing to Merab his name isn't "The Machine" for no reason.
His cardio and pace is the best in the UFC by FAR.
Umar did way better than Sean and Petr Yan despite him breaking his hand in the first.

I'm sure Umar will improve from this loss just like Islam improved after his loss to Martins and who knows maybe he'd beat Merab in a rematch🤷

Actually, Umar did very well, but the world does not expect anything less than total domination and submission from the Dagestanis. Even If they win through a split decision, everyone thinks they lost. This is what we saw in the first Islam vs. Volk fight. Even after Islam won, many thought it was a robbery.

There is a clear argument for Umar winning the fight but Umar made so many weird mistakes and I'll sum up only 5 of them:

1. bowing his head forward to Merab's punches which made them land 99% more. He thought too much of the take downs that he started imagining things that weren't there.
2. Swinging with full energy and anger (while missing many) multiple times every time there was a close exchange. (round 1, 2 and a bit in 3)
3. Not throwing sub attempts when he outsprawled Merab and Merab's neck was open in ideal positions multiple times (r1 & r2 r5). I've noticed this about Merab a lot, his neck is wide open with him not caring/knowing about its danger.
4. Not doing anything at all when he outwrestled Merab against the cage, I understand he was getting tired but literally nothing but hugging the waist and nothing else, so much so, Merab turned his head with both arms in the air and started cheering with the crowd. (his leg positioning was perfect to be swept to the floor)
5. Umar doesn't seem to know how the scoring is going nor how the state of the fight is. He doesn't know how to expend his energy when to press the gas and when to take time off. He's literally at the mercy of the coach (Khabib in this case)
6. Bonus point (that is very hard to fix): VERY nervous. Seen in this fight and last fight vs Sandhagen. Being nervous is very taxing on conditioning too, you lose gas tank just by breathing wrongly.
7. Bonus point 2: Khabib OVERTRAINING his fighters! And post work out fatigue moved to the cage. (not an excuse for Umar's energy expenditure mistakes but still)

At least Khabib has the balls to face the fact that they lost, unlike Russian media who has been whining all day yesterday that they have been robbed. Umar will be champion one day, but he was rushed into this fight too early and Merab was underestimated again.

The absolute nerve of Chandler to try and get a fight with Tsarukyan dude. His next 2-3 fights should ONLY be against guys lower ranked or outside the top 15. The fact he can just sit there, get high level fights, and lose them all while still remaining in the top 10 is a joke.
