Base model is just as fun. A clean Type S is hard to find.

I was driving an 06 Mazda 3 manual and they have vvt, which is like vtec from ford and lots of other cars have it, and it helps but when I test drove an rsx the vtec really made a difference in the feel, maybe not like way faster or anything but the smile it put on my face was different for sure

The part about VTEC depends. The base model K20A3 has this odd style of VTEC, or more actually the newer I-VTEC where one intake valve opens fully whilst the other opens partially to create this psuedo-swirl effect for fuel atomization within the combustion chamber. It's also only applied to the intake side and the exhaust side does not feature VTEC at all.

This is in contrast to the Type-S, equipped with the K20A2 (02-04) or the K20Z1 (05-06) that has fully-opening intake valves and VTEC on both intake and exhaust valvetrain.
