Buying Story
We live close to the Rocky Mountains, so we aren’t strangers to hiking. When we booked our trip to Switzerland, we knew we would want to see how the Swiss Alps compared to our home mountain range.
Prior to going to Switzerland, we did some research about different day treks we could go on, but once we arrived in Switzerland we heard about the infamous Via Ferrata. Locals told us the Via Ferrata is an experience like none other that would test our nerve.
We had the option to do the trek on our own but seeing as how we had never done anything like that before we decided to go with a guide. The guide didn’t hold our hand along the way, but he was there if we needed help.
Highlighted Key Features
Do the trek on your own or with a guide.
You are supplied with helmet, harness, and gloves.
Amazing views of the Lauterbrunnen valley are abundant.
An intense cable bridge tests your fear of heights.
Favourite Thing
We had two favourite things on the Via Ferrata. The 100m suspension bridge that tested our nerve. You fight the wind and the wobbles of your legs to make it from one end to the other. When you look to your left and right your greeted with a breathtaking view of spectacular mountains, and if you’re brave enough to look down you see the earth fall away. We didn’t think we were afraid of heights, but the suspension bridge taught me otherwise.
Our other favourite thing was climbing down a sheer rock face, using rebar steps that are driven into the side of a mountain. You are protected by lots of gear to prevent you from falling, but you still need to watch your footing because a foot getting stuck in rebar would be painful. Balancing the need to watch your feet, the adrenaline of being on a rockface, and taking in the amazing views of the valley around you is an experience like none other.
