When you're traveling across different countries, it's very easy to cherry pick the best parts of different places to create a perfect image in your head. The reality is, living abroad in a foreign country versus going on vacation is two completely separate things. In this video, I highlight some key learnings after living abroad for over 8 years, and share insightful tips on how to ease that transition.

Who am I? 🙋🏻‍♂️
I'm Jay, I love making videos about travel, self-help and tech. I currently work in New York City as a data engineer, but I grew up in Malaysia and lived in the UK when I was 19. Back then, I had no idea what life was about, moving to so many places, navigating career in Tech. Today, I've learned a lot and wanna share my perspective through filmmaking.

I've been abroad for 8 years and your conclusion that there's no place like home hits so hard. I live in a very beautiful and desirable location for which I'm grateful, and I love living out here but after being gone for so long home is the most special place on earth. I think my advice for people who will move abroad is not to underestimate culture shock, no matter how worldly you think you are, and that the sooner you embrace that you're LIVING there and not treating it as an extended things like an extended holiday, the faster you'll get over it.

As an immigrant living abroad, I can relate. Being mentally strong, going to the gym, and tapping into a good support system to be healthy is very important. Malaysia is a beautiful place. Spent some time there a few years ago. Thank you for sharing.

I am from Brazil and Sweden was my first experience abroad. After that New Zealand and Austrália. I totally agree that we need to be mentally strong. I really missed my relatives and friend at that time. I am going to Manchester with my wife by the end of July 2023 and back home in February next yer. I will share your vídeos with her as we want to become data engimeer like you bro!!

It's "the lovers are Italian." But I live in Britain and in relation to police, this is Hell, especially for minorities and women. We used to be one of the most expensive but now that seems to be the USA where my family were visiting "home" for a while although we haven't lived there for two decades and I'd never move back. We call it Disney-island. When you're living abroad for many years you go through culture shock and then gradually assimilate. It can take many years and for some go by more quickly. We agonised the first decade and enjoyed the second and now the UK is our home and the States seems odd and superficial.
