Nektaria Karantzi is a distinguished Greek vocalist renowned for her contributions to Byzantine ecclesiastical music and traditional Greek folk music. Born on August 5, 1982, in Greece, she has been actively involved in the Byzantine music scene since a young age.

Musical Career

Karantzi began chanting in church at the age of nine and made her first recordings at fourteen, accompanying Saint Porphyrios the Kapsokalyvite. Encouraged by him, she pursued formal studies in Byzantine music, earning a diploma from the Byzantine Music School of the Holy Metropolis of Piraeus. Her performances are dedicated to Byzantine chant and the Mediterranean's primeval musical traditions, and she has been internationally acclaimed as an ideal performer of Byzantine melos.

She has collaborated with notable figures such as Chronis Aidonidis, a master of Greek traditional music, and Vassilis Tsabropoulos, an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer, and conductor. Her collaborations have blended Byzantine hymns with Western and Eastern musical elements, leading to several European tours.

Academic and Teaching Involvement

Beyond her performance career, Karantzi teaches Byzantine music at the Central Conservatoire of Athens. She has been invited to conduct master classes at prestigious institutions, including the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary and the Sorbonne University in France, sharing her expertise in Byzantine chant.

Advocacy for Women in Byzantine Music

Passionate about promoting female participation in Byzantine music, Karantzi founded the "Women in Byzantine Music Worldwide Association" in 2013. She also leads the women's Byzantine choir "Psaltries Choir," comprising members from Greece and abroad, aiming to revive the ancient Greek term "psaltria" (female cantor) and encourage women's involvement in this musical tradition.

Νεκταρία, η πρώτη ψάλτρια. Όλες πάτησαν επάνω στο έργο της. Η καλύτερη. Και ένας απίστευτος άνθρωπος που έχει κάνει τεράστιο φιλανθρωπικό έργο.
