Steel wool has a coating of oil on it to prevent it from rusting. When I use it during cold bluing, I make sure to use acetone on it to remove the oil beforehand. That's likely why the reaction was so slow.

I guess it's copper, forming and precipitating on the metal, since iron is turning into ferrous sulphate

I don't think many Male Chemists would comment on how pretty of a blue Copper Sulfate is but I really appreciate that you did. I have thought about it to myself on other chemicals but given it is not relevant to the reactions, I never mentioned it.
